This edited volume comprises contributions to the international conference on the “Scientific Framework of Environmental and Forest Governance – The role of discourses and expertise” which was organised by the Chair of Forest and Nature Conservation Policy of the Georg-August-University in Göttingen/Germany in August 2007. It accounts for the increasing attention of the governance concept in environmental and forest policy research. The volume in detail addresses the role of discourses and expertise within the overall conceptual framework of governance, both from a theoretical and empirical point of view in environmental and forest related policies. It concludes that new modes of governance seem to represent a fruitful environment in which discourses and expertise - and their interactions - can be seen as important aspects for the analysis of policy processes.
Understanding policy analysis in France requires first a thorough exploration of the distinction usually made in French academic and practitioner debates between policy studies and policy analysis--essentially the difference between studies of policy and studies designed for the use of policy. This book begins there, then delves into questions of how and by whom knowledge of policies is produced within and outside the French state, showing that while the tension between the two types of study is real, the continued exchange of ideas between them has led to an enrichment of both spheres. The book thus lays the foundation for a more systematic understanding of policy analysis in France.
Public Policy Lessons from the AIDS Response in Africa examines how the interplay between national state dynamics in Africa and the global political arena has shaped the global AIDS response, and in this context develops a framework for analysing public policy action more broadly in contemporary Africa. L’ampleur des enjeux humains, économiques et sociaux posés par la question des solidarités entre générations a conduit l’International society of Family Law (ISFL) à choisir ce thème pour son XVe congrès mondial. Plus de 200 intervenants, venus de 50 pays, ont abordé ces questions sous l’angle juridique, mais aussi philosophique, économique et anthropologique. Cet ouvrage présente une partie de ces communications organisées autour de deux grands thèmes : l’enfant au cœur des solidarités familiales et la prise en charge des aînés par la famille. The importance of the human, economic and social issues caused by the question of generations’ solidarities led the International Society of Family Law to choose this theme for its XVIth World Congress (Lyon, July 19-23rd 2011). More than 200 speakers from 50 countries studied these questions from the legal angle, but also philosophic, economic and anthropological. This work collects a part of these papers about two great issues: the child, as the center of family solidarities; and the support for elders by family. Phenomena such as increasing life expectancy, population urbanization, labor-market entry barriers, decline of traditional family patterns, mark in depth our contemporary world and involve old solidarity disappearance and new solidarity emergence, reshaping relations between generations while bringing up the problem of the fate of the most vulnerable: children, the sick, disabled, and especially elderly people. – What then is the role of families and communities in protecting these people? – What is the relationship between public and private solidarity? – What are the rights and freedoms of people placed by age, illness or disability in a dependence situation? The Great Lakes region of Africa is characterized by protest politics, partial democratization, political illegitimacy and unstable economic growth. Many of the countries that are members of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) which are: Burundi, Angola, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Republic of the Congo, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Zambia, have experienced political violence and bloodshed at one time or another. While a few states have been advancing electoral democracy, environmental protection and peaceful state building, the overall intensity of violence in the region has led to civil wars, invasion, genocide, dictatorships, political instability, and underdevelopment. Efforts to establish sustainable peace, meaningful socio-economic development and participatory democracy have not been quite successful. Using various methodologies and paradigms, this book interrogates the complexity of the causes of these conflicts; and examines their impact and implications for socio-economic development of the region. The non-consensual actions related to these conflicts and imperatives of power struggles supported by the agents of savage capitalism have paralysed efforts toward progress. The book therefore recommends new policy frameworks within regionalist lenses and neo-realist politics to bring about sustainable peace in the region.
The scope of the regulations place Canada at the forefront of nutrition labelling, and the initiative is widely regarded as ground-breaking from a health policy perspective. [...] To date, the systematic analysis and evaluation of policy making in the prevention and control of chronic diseases is a neglected area of research efforts.2 In the Pilot Canadian Case Study, policy processes leading to the approval of mandatory nutrition labelling regulations are explored. [...] Specifically, we examine the formulation and decision-making stages of the policy cycle, and assess the key success factors in the development of nutrition labelling policies. [...] On the international stage, the scope of the 2002 regulations placed Canada at the forefront of nutrition labelling and the initiative is widely regarded as ground-breaking from a health policy perspective.
