DOWNLOAD EBOOKEvery Sunday around the world, Christians offer money and in-kind gifts to the church, traditionally known as alms. For communities that celebrate the Eucharist regularly, bread and wine, traditionally known as oblations, often accompany these gifts. What does it mean theologically for Christians to offer gifts to God, who first offered the greatest gift of Jesus Christ? This question regarding the role of alms and oblations in the liturgy was among the most controversial questions of the English Reformations in the sixteenth century. While the eucharistic prayer proper has often been the site of this theological controversy, the offertory rite has also received great attention. The 1552 English Book of Common Prayer excised all references to oblation in the offertory rite, but oblationary language and actions, such as the offertory procession, returned in full force by the twentieth century. The movement from the near elimination of oblation in the offertory rite to its widespread usage in the churches of the Anglican Communion is a remarkable liturgical and theological development. Using liturgical theology's tools of historical, textual, and contextual analyses, this book explores how this development occurred and why it is important for the church today.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAndrew Gant's compelling account traces English church music from Anglo-Saxon origins to the present. It is a history of the music and of the people who made, sang and listened to it. It shows the role church music has played in ordinary lives and how it reflects those lives back to us. The author considers why church music remains so popular and frequently tops the classical charts and why the BBC's Choral Evensong remains the longest-running radio series ever. He shows how England's church music follows the contours of its history and is the soundtrack of its changing politics and culture, from the mysteries of the Mass to the elegant decorum of the Restoration anthem, from stern Puritanism to Victorian bombast, and thence to the fractured worlds of the twentieth century as heard in the music of Vaughan Williams and Britten. This is a book for everyone interested in the history of English music, culture and society.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKA memoir by the renowned historian of music education, Bernarr Rainbow, including a selection of his writings and a biographical introduction by Peter Dickinson. Bernarr Rainbow's [1914-1998] Memoirs written in the last year or two of his life offers a fascinating read about the life of the man who became the leading historian of music education. The book answers questions about how his life and work developed and how he came to establish the Bernarr Rainbow Trust before he died in 1998. The collection will also bring together Rainbow's writings published in various magazines, some of very limited circulation. Thenotes by Peter Dickinson cover Rainbow's earlier life and career, from archival material including press cuttings and including areas he does not cover in his memoirs. There are introductions by Gordon Cox and Charles Plummeridge. PETER DICKINSON, the composer and pianist, is emeritus professor, University of Keele and University of London. He has written or edited several books about twentieth-century music, including Copland Connotations [2002], The Music of Lennox Berkeley [2003], CageTalk [2006], and the more recent Lord Berners and Samuel Barber Remembered.
