Excerpt from Animal Life and Human Progress It may at least be claimed for the lectures that they represent the latest views upon matters with which they deal. If these views appear in some cases to be subversive of modern biological doctrine it must be remembered that biological thought is progressive; were it otherwise the claims of bio logical science to a foremost place in our educational system might well be considered questionable. The doctrine of Organic Evolution, for example, looms large in several of the lectures, and a certain advance is to be observed from the position held by Charles Darwin and his immediate followers. The foundations of this doctrine, however, remain unshaken, and it is only the superstructure which has been, perhaps too hastily, erected upon them that is being more or less recon structed in accordance with recent investigations. The unexpectedly large audiences which were attracted to the lectures, and the great interest evinced in them at the time of delivery, seem to justify the hope that in their present form they may appeal to an even larger circle. Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Excerpt from Animal Life and Intelligence However profoundly the laws of phenomena may be modified by such introduction of new and higher factors, the older and lower factors are still at work beneath the surface. And he who would adequately grasp the social problems of our time should bring to them a mind prepared by a study of the laws of organic life: for human beings, rational and moral though they may be, are still organisms and man can in no wise alter or annul those deep-lying facts which nature has throughout the ages been weaving into the tissue of life. Some parts of this work are necessarily more technical, and therefore more abstruse, than others. This is especially the case with Chapters III V., and VI.; while, for those unacquainted with philosophical thought, perhaps the last chapter may present difficulties of a different order. With these exceptions, the book will not be beyond the ready comprehension of the general reader of average intelligence. To trace this order and to seek its cause is one of the most interesting occupations which can engage the human mind. And is one well worthy of honest study through life, even if but little apparent progress should be made therein. Excerpt from Animal Life Life - and its negation, death - are subjects which have puzzled the wise people of all ages. What is life? is a question which the Sphinx might have put to (Edipus with the certainty of not getting an answer; and the same question even in the present day fails to call forth a reply which satisfies the inquirer. Perhaps no answer can be given which would: all that we can say about life is that it is the sum total of the actions which are always going on in living beings. Or, if the reader prefer Mr. Herbert Spencer's philosophical definition, life is - "The definite combination of heterogeneous changes, both simultaneous and successive, in correspondence with external co-existences and sequences." This answer may do for the modem biologist; it would not have saved (Edipus from the Sphinx. Living things are quite apart from things which are not living. Mr. Huxley tells us that science knows no link between them. It is not a question of beauty of form or delicacy of structure, or intricacy in the arrangement of parts.
