DOWNLOAD EBOOKAnemia is a frequent complication of cancer and its treatment. A number of clinical studies shows that the impact of anemia is much greater than previously thought. Beyond clinical symptoms, anemia significantly impairs physical and metabolic functions as well as patients' activity, well-being and quality of life. Life expectancy is also affected. In this book, written by a group of outstanding international experts, the current knowledge on anemia in cancer and its treatment with rhEPO is presented. Future developments are also discussed. Based on a broad spectrum of topics, the book describes the scientific and clinical aspects of anemia in various fields of oncology and gives diagnostic and therapeutic recommendations on when and how to use rhEPO.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis groundbreaking book presents a unique and practical approach to the evolving field of exercise oncology - the study of physical activity in the context of cancer prevention and control. Presenting the current state of the art, the book is sensibly divided into four thematic sections. Following an opening chapter presenting an overview and timeline of exercise oncology, the chapters comprising part I discuss primary cancer prevention, physical activity and survivorship, and the mechanisms by which these operate. Diagnosis and treatment considerations are discussed in part II, including prehabilitation, exercise during surgical recovery, infusion and radiation therapies, and treatment efficacy. Post-treatment and end-of-life care are covered in part III, including cardio-oncology, energetics and palliative care. Part IV presents behavioral, logistical and policy-making considerations, highlighting a multidisciplinary approach to exercise oncology as well as practical matters such as reimbursement and economics. Written and edited by experts in the field, Exercise Oncology will be a go-to practical resource for sports medicine clinicians, family and primary care physicians, oncologists, physical therapy and rehabilitation specialists, and all medical professionals who treat cancer patients.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis volume provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of the pathogenesis, treatment and treatment effects of chronic anaemia of cancer as well as chemotherapy- and radiotherapy-induced anaemia. It is the result of a joint effort by the members of the European School of Oncology (ESO) Task Force on Anaemia in Cancer and the participants of an ESO Symposium on this topic. negative prognostic factor for clinical outcome in cancer patients. In addition, there is evidence that tissue hypoxia contributes to the progression of malignant disease by inducing a more malignant phenotype, stimulating angiogenesis within tumour tissues, and diminishing the sensitivity of tumour cells to chemotherapy and radiation therapy. traditional treatment for anaemia - the transfusion of red blood cells - has significant limitations. This situation has changed dramatically with the introduction of recombinant human erythropoietin, which acts as an important physiological stimulator of human erythropoiesis. The beneficial effects of erythropoietin markedly exceed those of transfusions. Erythropoietin can lead to complete, long-term normalization of anaemia which in turn results in a significant improvement in anaemic cancer patients' quality of life and physical exercise capacity.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe book contains a series of about 40 articles reflecting the state-of-the-art of the topic "Pathophysiology and Pharmacology of Erythropoietin". Results from both basic research and clinical studies are described in detail. The papers show that the possible therapeutic spectrum of erythropoietin could be expanded considerably when compared with the present situation.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKAnemia in the elderly has been properly defined as the silent epidemic, representing 3 million people in the United States aged 65 years and older. Incidence and prevalence of this condition increase with age. It differs in its etiology, pathogenesis and treatment from anemia in children and younger adults. Anemia is associated with reduced survival, increased risk of functional dependence and hospitalization, increased risk of congestive heart failure and stage renal disease and cognitive disorders. Approximately 70% of anemia in older individuals is reversible.
