Excerpt from An Examination Into the Doctrine and Practice of Confession I have thought it best not to load my pages with numerous references to patristic books (not on the shelves of ordinary libraries) in support of facts, the authorities for which can be found almost exhaustively, certainly abundantly and sufficiently, in the pages of such works as Bingham and Usher, and the note in the translation of Tertullian in the Library of the Fathers. I have, therefore, referred my readers to these books, where they will find not only references to the original works, but generally full length quota tions of the passages referred to. Excerpt from The Doctrine of Confession in the Church of England No question affecting the Church of England can be fairly considered, except by connecting together its earlier and its later history, as presenting different phases of one living body, holding in substance the same truth. It was not the purpose of the English Reformation to ignore the traditions of the past, the changes which then took place being avowedly grounded on an appeal to an earlier standard. Its object, as the oft-repeated declarations of its leaders abundantly testify, was to correct abuses, and remove novelties of doctrine or practice, which had grown up during the middle ages at variance with primitive revelation. It is but one instance of this fundamental principle, that our existing formularies are framed upon the ancient service books of the Catholic Church. They profess to be, and are, at least in their essential features, a reconstruction of its traditionary system; and only on this ground they claim our allegiance. Excerpt from Confession and Absolution: An Investigation of the Teaching of the Bible and Prayer Book Mr. Gerry had made a collection of nearly all the books, large and small, on this subject, which had been published of late years in the Anglican Communion, and we went over them together. Some were excellent from the historical and theo logical standpoint, but too exclusively dogmatic. Others, again, took a line so apologetic (in the common sense of the term) as to render them quite useless for the purpose we had in view, namely, to provide a Manual which could be placed in the hands of lay people desirous of informing them selves in regard to the doctrine and practice of Confession in our Church. Excerpt from A Commentary on the Confession of Faith: With Questions for Theological Students and Bible Classes This Commentary on the "Confession of Faith" consists of an analysis of its chapters and sections, with proofs and illustrations of its doctrines. It aims to bring out the natural and historically-established sense of the text. Its design is to stimulate and facilitate the study of this excellent body of Christian truth among theological students, Bible-class scholars, ruling elders and ministers. It was first published in 1869, and, having been circulated in Great Britain and Ireland as well as in America, the Board of Publication has been encouraged to issue a new edition. Two appendices have been added to this edition. The first contains the statement of the representative theologians, Dr. Charles Hodge and Dr. Henry B. Smith, as to the sense in which the historical Presbyterian Church understands intrants into her ministry to accept the "Confession of Faith as containing the system of doctrine taught in the Holy Scriptures;" in which understanding the two branches of the Presbyterian Church are thus shown to have been perfectly agreed. The second appendix contains the only two official explanations of the sense in which the Westminster Confession is understood by their respective denominations made by representative bodies - i. e. the "Auburn Declaration" in 1837 and the "Declarative Act" of the United Presbyterian Synod of Scotland in 1879. In the mean time very much light has been thrown upon the Westminster Assembly and its proceedings by the labors of the Rev. Dr. A. F. Mitchell, professor of ecclesiastical history in St. Mary's College, St. Andrews. In 1867 and 1874 he published with a learned introduction, the Minutes of the Westminster Assembly and his Baird lecture for 1882, The Westminster Assembly, its History and Standards.
