Excerpt from An Essay on the Mode and Subjects of Christian Baptism: Intended to Shew, According to the Presbyterian Confession of Faith, Chapter XVIII., Sec; 3rd and 4th, "Dipping of the Person Into Water Is Not Necessary" It is improbable that all the Jews were in the habit of immer sing themselves often every day between meal times; or of washing or Baptizing any more than their hands after coming from the market. And there is no proof that they washed or Baptized their hands in any other way than we do, when we wash our hands or faces, by applying water to them. In Mark VII. 4, we read, and many other things there be which they have received to hold, as the washing Baptizing) of cups and pots, and brazen vessels and of tables (or couches.) And all these things were doubtless washed, or Baptized, then, as they are now; by applying water to them in such quantity and mode as was most convenient for the purposes of cleansing. Excerpt from Essays on Christian Baptism The cause of the bible is the cause of God, and the only noble cause of men. The individual who contributes anything to the more wide diffusion of the light which is from heaven, among the inhabitants Of the earth, promotes that cause, ele vates the human character, and brings the world under Obligation to him as a benefactor at the same time he adds a note to the anthem once sung by angels Glory to God in the highest On earth peace; good will to ward men. In order to do this, it is not indispensable that new truth be discovered. The bible contains an entire and perfect theology; and to take of the things of Christ and show them to men, is enough. This the Christian may do, as the instrument Of the Holy Spirit. It is a no less noble or useful work to help a Chris tian brother to clearer and brighter light, than to reflect the light on the darkness Of unregenerated minds. The main design Of this book is, to communicate important truths to scholars already in the school of Christ. Excerpt from An Essay on the Mode and Design of Christian Baptism: In Which the Scriptures Are Carefully Examined, and Made the Only Book of Appeal for Positive Proof The propriety of. Religious. Disputation, or cons. Troversial divinity [has been a rriatter of doubt with many. Some artfully decry it, inorder to avoid free enquiry; some'hate ir because they do not like to be against it, to save thema selves the disgrace of exposing'their ignorance, or the labor of examiningand defending their own the ses. There are others who avoid it, not because they'are convinced of the impropriety of the thing itself; but because of the evil, temper with which it is generally conducted. The propriety of it will however appear, if we consider that every article of religion is denied by some, and cannot well be be lieved by any, without examination. Religion em powers as to investigate, debate, and controvert eacharticle, in order to ascertain the evidence of its truth. The divine writings, many of them are controversi al; the book of Job, and Paul's epistles, especially. Excerpt from An Humble Essay on Christian Baptism: With Two Letters to the Rev. Stephen Addington, Concerning the Subjects and Mode of Baptism Hough it appears fo very clear that the baptifm of believers is re commended in fcripture, both by preeept and precedent, yet many, who, as appears by this their conduet, do not fulfi Ciently regard that facred book, deride thole who praetife it. Hereby fome fincere Chrifiians who would follow the lamb whitherfoever he goeth, are often confufed in their ideas, and dil'tre 'ed in their minds, if not mifguided in their praefice. It may be allowed, that very much cannot well be laid, more than has be fore been faid on this fubjeet; yet it is hoped, that could a few thoughts, in ealy and fami liar language, fuited to the capacities ofcom mon readers, be once more offered to View, it might, under the bicfiing of God, have a happy tendency to difcover the error of thole vain perlons, who, alas delight in reproach ing what they know little of; to fatisfy fome inquiring fouls, and ef'tablifh fome weak minds, with regard to this ordinance. With this View the following remarks are humbly, and in the fpirit of meeknefs, fubmitted to con fideration.
