DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from On Prayers to the Dead Supply the need of scholars, as the book list at the beginning of this volume will show. There are also brief tracts to supply a cer tain sort of popular demand. My ambition has been to produce a book which should pre sent the essentials oi my subject, and at the same time so present them as to attract, not the clergy, but the laity. Such a book, I conceive, should be clear, brief, and not cum bered with technicalities. My humble posi tion is that of a popularizer, attempting to reach a public which is not much given to theological reading. We of the clergy are apt to blame the laity because they do not do as much theological reading as we think they ought, and then we do not take pains to provide them with books which they can read with ease and profit. Here is an at tempt in one department of theology whether success or failure time will show. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from A Remembrance for the Living to Pray for the Dead James Mum ford, a native of the county of Norfolk, was born in the year 1606. His name is spelt in various ways. The Catalogue of the English Province S. J. for the year 1642, calls him "Momford." That for the year 1655 calls him, in the body of it, "Jacobus Momfordus," whilst in the index to the same it has " Mumfordus." Mr. Dodd, in a very brief notice of this Father, in his Church History, vol. iii., p. 321, calls him "Monford;" and Father Nathaniel South-well, in his Bibliotheca Scriptorum Societatis Jesu (Rome, 1676) gives his name as "Jacobus Munfordus." He entered the Society of Jesus in the year 1626, made his noviceship at Watten, and was professed of the four vows on the 29th September, 1641. In the Catalogue of the Province for the year 1642, he appears as Father Minister of the English College S. J. at Liege, at the same time being Consultor of the College and teaching humanities. He was subsequently Rector of the College. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Prayers for the Dead, for the Use of Members of the Church of England: With a Preface; To Which Are Added Meditations on the Four Last Things, With Instructions for Using Them, and Other Devotions A witness in support of this view is found in the prevalence amongst all nations, in the most ancient times, of the rites of burial. There is the same sort of evidence that the universal custom of primitive times was to bury their dead out of their sight, that there is of the original worship of one God. And this custom is as undoubted a note of belief in the resurrection of the flesh, burning the body or yet worse departures from primitive practice of infidelity. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Prayer for the Departed HE materials out of which this treatise has been formed have been accumulating for many years. It has always been a source of great pleasure and satisfaction to the Author to visit and examine our most interesting and instructive old parish churches amongst the greatest glories of the country. And While he deeply laments that restorations of so many of them have been carried out in anything but a conservative spirit, it is impossible to be otherwise. Than heartily grateful that the tide of destruction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Why Do We Pray for the Dead?: The Reasons for the Church's Belief in Purgatory Why do Catholics pray for the dead is a question frequently asked by our non-catholic fellow citizens. Since the practice of praying for the souls of the deceased is based upon the doctrine of Purgatory which was abandoned by the Reformers in the sixteenth century, and is now prao tically unknown among their fol lowers, the latter are naturally at a loss to understand the Catholic cus tom of praying for their departed brethren, or as it is commonly, called, the devotion to the poor souls. DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from Prayers Adapted to Various Occasions of Social Worship: For Which Provision Is Not Made in the Book of Common Prayer To seek honor for ourselves in praying, or in compiling prayers, would be highly improper and indeed sinful. In preparing these, I seek not the praise of originality; but gladly avail myself of the labors of others. Next after the Holy Scriptures, I have preferred the language of the Book of Common Prayer, and in many instances I have adopted the expressions of other writers.' If we have forms of sound words, suitable for those who would unite in God's holy worship, by whom the words were first used is of very little importance, the in Spired writings excepted.
