DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book addresses itself to mobilisation and involvement of rural people in development projects. It describes an imperfect but, nonetheless, exciting and thought-provoking exercise that drew social science researchers and students from four public universities in Kenya into an experiment in participatory research, community education and development in two locations. The experiment was grounded on the assumptions that the people of Kenya are a primary resource and that given proper roles and contribution of planners, researchers and programme implementers, self-sustainable development can become a reality. The contributors of this book have focused on the potential of the university to facilitate participation of the people in development. They have given specific suggestions on how this might be accomplished.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKRecent efforts in national planning in Kenya have sought to identify development priorities through consultations. The Government of Kenya, in its effort to eradicate poverty and to promote pro-poor growth, established the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) under the Constituencies Development Fund Act of December 2003. This study sought to investigate whether the CDF has improved the livelihoods and welfare of women and girls in the Kenyan society and whether women are being enabled to participate more visibly in the local development processes. The objectives of this study were: To investigate the needs and priorities of males and females with regard to CDF projects as perceived by them; To establish the differences that may exist between the sexes in terms of awareness of the CDF and in terms of participation in CDF management, in project identification and implementation and in other decision-making processes that determine how these funds are invested; To evaluate the distributive impact of the CDF projects in the health and education sectors; To investigate the factors or challenges for the achievement of greater parity and for the attainment of CDF objectives; and to put forward policy recommendations.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe Political Logic of Poverty Relief places electoral politics and institutional design at the core of poverty alleviation. DOWNLOAD EBOOKTax “justice” has become an increasingly central issue of political debate in many countries, particularly following the cardiac arrest of global financial services in 2008 and the subsequent worldwide slump in trade and production. The evident abuse of tax systems by corporations and rich individuals through tax avoidance schemes and offshore shadow banking is increasingly in the public eye. Above all, the political challenges of recovery and structural reform have raised core issues of burden-sharing and social equity on the agendas of both civil society groups and political elites. Democratic states need tax revenue to fund public goods and combat public “bads” with any degree of legitimacy. The contributions to this book discuss the haphazard evolution of contemporary taxation systems, their contradictory effects in a globalized economy, and the urgency of their reform as a precondition for social justice.
