DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from An Appeal to the Young Men of the Presbyterian Church in the Synod of South Carolina and Georgia Among the many evidences of a low state of religious feeling in this portion of our church, is the small number of young men of piety who are selecting the ministry as their field of labor. Many of our churches lie waste and unoccupied a large extent of country in which the doc trine and discipline of Presbyterianism would find ready support, is unvisited by the feet of our ministers; our theological seminary, reared thus far with much labor and sacrifice, is frequented by comparatively a little band of students; our missionary, education, tract, and Sunday school organizations languish, because we have not men coming forward for the ministry in numbers sufficient to meet the demand and to secure the best good of society. While the church elsewhere is instinct with life and action, and is rousing herself with surprising energy to the work of converting the world, a gloomy lethargy has crept Over our Southern Zion, which makes the heart sad.
