Abstract: "This paper describes the amount of information of a sentence interpretation, which is used as a measure for the disambiguation process in a natural language understanding system. This measure is defined, based on a hearer's model with knowledge base composed of proposition set and inference rule set. Selecting the most informative interpretation by this measure is reasonable in the sence that communication is an act whereby messages are transmitted with the least effort. This formalization is applied to a practical procedure for anaphoric ambiguity resolution, which is constructed as a part of a question-answering system. Furthermore, a conversation experiment was carried out, and it was found that ninety-three percent of referents corresponding to anaphoric indicators could be correctly determined."
Inhaltsangabe:Abstract: With the beginning of the 1990s, the knowledge era arrived and virtually no organisation can afford to neglect a thorough and methodical discussion on the idea of "managing knowledge". The importance and the prominent role knowledge plays today cannot be overemphasised. As we shall see later on, knowledge and the ability to leverage it provides a comprehensive source of competitive advantage. Keeping this idea in mind the subsequent research project is structured in three main parts. The first part provides an introduction into the field of knowledge. General ideas will be explained, definitions and rationalisations shall be provided. Part two is designed to examine the two central columns of knowledge management: the creation and the transfer of knowledge. In order to analyse both subjects in an entire, comprehensive way, the subsequent dissertation outlines differences and similarities between the two most prominent methodologies: the Anglo-Saxon and the Japanese approach. Within the third part it is intended to combine theoretical findings and pragmatic insights (although the whole paper is for the most part of theoretical nature, cf. research methodology) to develop managerial implications for knowledge management. To be precise, what are the prerequisites of knowledge management? In order to further develop the methodological approach, I structured the part in four points that I consider as the unconditional, complete preconditions for effective knowledge management: culture, HR issues, strategy, and process. The four issues ought to build the foundation for every successful knowledge management initiative. To underline theoretical results the appendix provides two case studies (Siemens and IBM Global Service) as well as a practical guide for measuring knowledge (from the American Productivity and Quality Centre). Generally speaking, the subject matter knowledge management is of profound interest within the discipline of strategic management. Literature on the topic is virtually impossible to count. Nevertheless, within the research paper I intend to concentrate on the most well-known and recognised scholars who worked and still perform on knowledge management. The objective of the subsequent paper is to provide an overview of one of the most difficult and noteworthy topics in strategic management and to examine and analyse different approaches as well as to develop own ideas of so-called key-success [...]
Second language assessment is ubiquitous. It has found its way from education into questions about access to professions and migration. This volume focuses on the main debates and research advances in second language assessment in the last fifty years or so, showing the influence of linguistics, politics, philosophy, psychology, sociology, and psychometrics. There are four parts which, when taken together, address the principles and practices of second language assessment while considering its impact on society. Read separately, each part addresses a different aspect of the field. Part I deals with the conceptual foundations of second language assessment with chapters on the purposes of assessment, and standards and frameworks, as well as matters of scoring, quality assurance, and test validation. Part II addresses the theory and practice of assessing different second language skills including aspects like intercultural competence and fluency. Part III examines the challenges and opportunities of second language assessment in a range of contexts. In addition to chapters on second language assessment on a national scale, there are chapters on learning-oriented assessment, as well as the uses of second language assessment in the workplace and for migration. Part IV examines a selection of important issues in the field that deserve attention. These include the alignment of language examinations to external frameworks, the increasing use of technology to both deliver and score second language tests, the responsibilities associated with assessing test takers with special needs, the concept of 'voice' in second language assessment, and assessment literacy for teachers and other test and score users.

After the IPS2 conferences in Cranfield and Linköping in 2009 and 2010 the 3rd CIRP International Conference on Industrial Product Service Systems (IPS2) 2011 takes place in Braunschweig, Germany. IPS2 itself is defined as “an integrated industrial product and service offering that delivers value in use”. The customers expect comprehensive solutions, which are adapted to their individual needs. IPS2 offers the possibility to stand out from competition and for long-term customer loyalty. Particularly in times of economic crisis it becomes apparent which producing companies understand to satisfy the needs and requirements of their customers. This volume is a presentation of all methods of legal knowledge representation from the point of view of jurisprudence as well as computer science. A new method of automatic analysis of legal texts is presented in four case studies. Law is seen as an information system with legally formalised information processes. The achieved coverage of legal knowledge in information retrieval systems has to be followed by the next step: conceptual indexing and automatic analysis of texts. Existing approaches of automatic knowledge representations do not have a proper link to the legal language in information systems. The concept-based model for semi-automatic analysis of legal texts provides this necessary connection. The knowledge base of descriptors, context-sensitive rules and meta-rules formalises properly all important passages in the text corpora for automatic analysis. Statistics and self-organising maps give assistance in knowledge acquisition. The result of the analysis is organised with automatically generated hypertext links. Four case studies show the huge potential but also some drawbacks of this approach.
