Excerpt from Index to 1850 United States Federal Census of Indiana: Letters O-P-Q The indexing of the federal 1850 population census of Indiana was begun in 1950. It required five years to complete. Only heads of families and persons of a different surname than the head of household were indexed. Indexing was all done from the first positive film copies made by the National Archives. The microfilm was dim and in many instances entire pages were illegible. Some of these pages were later checked with the original books in the National Archives, Washington, D.C. Page numbers are for the most part the handwritten continuous paging given in the upper right hand corner of the film. Indexing of the microfilm was done by the staff of the Genealogy Division and Mrs. Ruth Slevin was the principal transcriber. None of this indexing was double checked. Alphabetizing of the 3 by 5 cards was per formed by numerous staff members of the Division over the years. This alphabetizing was also not checked and consequently there are errors. In 1969, the Public Library of Fort Wayne and Allen County contracted with the Indiana State Library to have the 3 by 5 cards typed. In addition to financing the typing of this project, the Fort Wayne Library was permitted typed copies for their own library use. Transcribed by Mr. Cox, the 1850 U.S. slave census for Georgia is important for two reasons. First, some of the slave owners appearing here do not appear in the 1850 U.S. census of population for Georgia and are thus "restored" to the population of 1850. Second, and of considerable interest to historians, the transcription shows that less than 10 percent of the Georgia white population owned slaves in 1850. In fact, by far the largest number of slave owners were concentrated in Glynn County, a coastal county known for its rice production. The slave owners' census is arranged in alphabetical order according to the surname of the slave owner and gives his/her full name, number of slaves owned, and the county of residence. It is one of the great disappointments of the ante bellum U.S. population census that the slaves themselves are not identified by name; rather, merely as property owned. Nevertheless, now that Mr. Cox has made the names of these Georgia slave owners with their aggregations of slaves more widely available, it may be just possible that more persons with slave ancestors will be able to trace them via other records (property records, for example) pertaining to the 37,000 slave owners enumerated in this new volume.
