Judy Cain’s parents survived the Great Depression and saved everything they ever had. One could call them pack-rats or say that they had a hoarder starter kit. One day while digging through her parents’ belongings after they both passed away and went “HOME”, Judy, came across some very old letters. All were addressed to June Larson in Minneapolis, MN and were all from Louis Nelson, her sweetheart and future husband. During World War II, Louie had written over 300 letters to June as their love was blossoming. In them he expressed his love for her; his calling and dream of becoming a minister and servant of the Lord; his struggle with stuttering; his seeming lack of faith at different points during the war; and what he felt was an inability to truly pray. He shielded her from the gruesomeness of the war as they fell deeper and deeper in love with each other. She provided the encouragement and support for him to stay strong and true to himself. This book was originally written only for her family and contained only the letters, but it has grown into much more. Historical, contextual information, photographs, poems, scripture verses, and his Unit’s history are all woven throughout the letters to help provide a context and highlight his spiritual struggle to overcome barriers to the ministry and maintain if not grow his faith during frightening and gruesome experiences of the war in Europe. If a man who felt the strong calling of God could overcome his struggles during a war, then so can anyone. God’s power is limitless.

Louie is one special dog. His tongue likes to hang out of his mouth, and his extra-long legs make him pretty clumsy. Still, Louie dreams of being a champion dog like his brothers. Louie spends most of his time playing with his favorite toy—his ball. He can bounce it and toss it, and soon he hopes to balance on it. One day, Louie goes to cheer on his brothers at the dog show and slips on his ball into the center of the stage. But what will the crowd make of this little dog with not-so-little dreams? Little Louie is the fictional story of a very real rescue dog that captured the heart and imagination of writer/illustrator Kathryn Finney. Through Finney’s masterful and infectiously cheerful paintings, Louie teaches kids to celebrate their strengths and to never give up their dreams. Everyone who reads this book will want to give lovable little Louie a forever home. Sky Pony Press, with our Good Books, Racehorse and Arcade imprints, is proud to publish a broad range of books for young readers—picture books for small children, chapter books, books for middle grade readers, and novels for young adults. Our list includes bestsellers for children who love to play Minecraft; stories told with LEGO bricks; books that teach lessons about tolerance, patience, and the environment, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

Poor Louie! Life is perfect for this pup until Mom’s belly starts getting bigger. . . . A funny and touching tale for big siblings from the illustrator of the Bink and Gollie series. Louie’s life is great! A walk on the leash every morning, ice cream on Sundays, snuggling in bed at night with Mom and Dad. Even the playdates with Mom’s friends — despite their little crawling creatures who pull Louie’s ears — aren’t all that bad. But then things get weird: cold food on the floor, no room in the bed, and lots of new stuff coming into the house in pairs — two small beds, two little sweaters, two seats in the stroller. Does that bode double trouble ahead, or could there be a happier surprise in store for Louie? With perfect visual pacing, Tony Fucile takes a familiar story and gives it a comic spin.

An apprentice sushi chef and a mysterious blue-eyed woman share a bottle of wine inside a climate-controlled otter tank. The Great Wall of China grumbles as workers forego construction to watch an imperial game of baseball. A young woman tries to imagine a future unsullied by her family’s history of untimely death. First issued in 1991, Pangs of Love introduced David Wong Louie’s bold storytelling. The son of Chinese immigrants, he centered his stories around characters who are in conflict with their place in the world, disconnected from both American society and their own families. The depth of his portrayals renders their experiences of love, envy, loneliness, loss, and duty universal—informed by their heritage yet not confined by it. These twelve short stories and one essay swerve from the absurd to longing for love, understanding, or simply a morsel of food. Pangs of Love and Other Writings makes Louie’s debut book available again, along with an additional short story and an extraordinary autobiographical essay, “Eat, Memory,” in which he reflects on life without food after throat cancer took away his ability to swallow. Pulitzer Prize–winner Viet Thanh Nguyen contributes a foreword elucidating Louie’s role in shaping contemporary Asian American literature, while an afterword by literary scholar King-Kok Cheung retraces the three phases of Louie’s career.

Louie tells of his adoption into the family, the last few years of his dads dying of cancer, his compassion for the terminally ill and the elders in nursing homes and assisted living. His letters have helped to brighten their days with laughter and let them know they are not forgotten. Common day events become filled with life and colors, as Louie simplifies his love of life. It is as if we could see through this animals eyes, and the perception is different... and beautiful. The book relates all of Louies life experiences, cloaked in a cat story. LOUiES LETTERS will bring both tears and laughter.
