Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: Down the rabbit hole away little Alice goes. Follow her at your own peril, but beware of the world you are about to enter. One with a decapitation-crazed queen, an unintelligible duchess, a sleepy dormouse, a chronically late rabbit, a witty Cheshire cat, a blue hookah-smoking caterpillar, a Hatter and a March Hare hosting a mad tea party, and a caucus race so bewildering that the best way to explain it is just to do it. Through the Looking Glass: Adventure, mayhem, and madness continue for young Alice after she climbs through the mirror hanging above her fireplace's mantel. Into the reflective world she travels, and soon she discovers that just as everything is backward in a mirror's reflection, so is everything, from backward sentences to backward logic, in the mirror world. Rank by rank, Alice must cross through an enormous chess board as she meets a fantastical motley crew of creatures, chess pieces, and humans alike. What shall happen when little Alice reaches the end of the chess board?

"e;This very pretty and funny book ought to become a great favourite with children. It has this advantage, that it has no moral, and that it does not teach anything."e; -- The Sunderland Herald 25 May 1866A century and half after its original publication, Lewis Carroll's fantastical, phantasmagorical Wonderland is still endlessly fascinating to both children and adults. Quizzical Alice and the White Rabbit, the Mad Hatter and the tyrannical Queen of Hearts, and their dreamlike world of teacups and mushrooms are universally beloved - but less well known are their roots and origins in the north east, which inspired Carroll's creativity and imagination throughout his life.Produced to mark the 150th anniversary of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, this beautiful new edition explores Carroll's life and connections with the north east, from his holidays at Whitburn and Southwick to the inspiration he found in Sunderland, Ravensworth and Penshaw. Follow Alice once again down the rabbit hole to celebrate Carroll's own enchanting dreamworld, and the unexpected places he discovered it in.

Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (1871) is a novel by Lewis Carroll (Charles Lutwidge Dodgson), the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). It is based on his meeting with another Alice, Alice Raikes. Set some six months later than the earlier book, Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. Though not quite as popular as Wonderland, Through the Looking-Glass includes such celebrated verses as "Jabberwocky" and "The Walrus and the Carpenter", and the episode involving Tweedledum and Tweedledee.

Originally conceived by its author as an entertaining story for Alice Liddell, the daughter of an Oxford dean, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the fantastic tale of the young Alice's encounters with the White Rabbit, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts, has captured the imaginations of young and old throughout the world since it was first published in 1865. In addition to the vivid and unforgettable characters, it is the book's experimental style, linguistic inventiveness and myriad of jokes and puzzles that account for the timeless fascination it inspires. This volume includes John Tenniel's iconic engravings, the sequel Through the Looking Glass and a facsimile of Alice's Adventure's Under Ground, the early manuscript version of the novel illustrated by Lewis Carroll himself.
