Excerpt from Agricultural Economics Research, Vol. 24: July 1972 Using the higher (absolute value) demand elasticities results in less favorable but viable conditions for agriculture in 1980 if diversion policies are continued. With a continuation of programs to divert 6 percent of potential farm output from commercial markets, net farm income would increase billion over the 1969 level. Demand increasing 50 percent faster than supply with high demand schedule. - The set of outcomes in table 5 which most nearly fits our expectations for 1980 results from a percent annual shift in demand, a percent annual shift in supply, a short-run demand elasticity, and a long-run demand elasticity.8 Depending on Government diversion and payment policies, the parity ratio would decrease 6 to 9 points. With one exception, the quantity of farm products demanded and supplied would increase. Net farm income would decrease moderately to billion under continuation of diversion and Government payment policies of the 1960's, and it would decrease severely to billion under a 1970 free market supply and to billion under a policy that gradually reverts to a free market by 1980. Thus continued diversion and payment programs are needed to avoid a major drop in net farm income. Table 6 contains annual estimates for this set of outcomes. Excerpt from Agricultural Economics Research, Vol. 24: October, 1972 Cost-benefit ratios for surveys are related to the congruence between objectives and survey measure ment capabilities. A high degree of congruence requires careful matching of objectives and survey design. Thus, emphasis is placed on survey planning and improvement of relationships between survey designs and objectives. The degree of congruence has a significant effect on the efficiency of research and the interpretations and value of results. Excerpt from Agricultural Economics Research, Vol. 24: January, 1972 Due to the nature of the variables used in measuring supply availability, caution must be taken in comparing elasticities across institutions. For commercial banks, the elasticity with respect to time deposits was estimated at The implication is that as the farm sector increases its holdings of time deposits at commercial banks, the supply of farm mortgage funds forthcoming from banks should increase substantially. For life insurance com panics, the estimated elasticity for total investments is This implies that life insurance companies tend to increase holdings of farm mortgages about one-half as fast as total investments, other things equal. In recent years, however, other things have not been equal. The spread between the yield on farm and nonfarm invest ments has changed rapidly and this has accounted for significant changes in life insurance company lending to agriculture. The elasticity of real estate value for individuals and other was estimated at indicating that the supply of farm mortgage funds from this source does not increase in equal proportion to increases in real estate value. Excerpt from Agricultural Economics Research, Vol. 4: A Journal of Economic and Statistical Research in the Bureau of Agricultural Economics and Cooperating Agencies; July, 1952 In formulating the forecast of general eco nomic activity, we focus attention on two main questions. First, what is the anticipated level of consumers' disposable income in the United States? We use this measurement because it has proved to be the best over-all indicator of the demand for agricultural products consumed domestically. Second, what is the anticipated level of exports from the United States, par ticularly exports of farm products?
