Excerpt from Africa, Vol. 1 IN the new issue of this series the single volume formerly thought sufficient for the treatment of African geography is replaced by two, each somewhat larger than that work. Yet the more than doubled space has seemed scarcely adequate to a proper exposition of the facts, both of a geographical and political order, which have accumulated with surprising rapidity since the leading Powers resolved, a few years ago, to transform this continent to a political dependency of Europe. Occurrences of far-reaching consequence have followed-in such swift succession that in the preparation of this work the chief difficulty has been to keep pace with the shifting scenes. In some instances many carefully-prepared pages have had to be greatly modified, and even re-written, owing to the un expected turn taken by events in various parts of the continent. Excerpt from The Story of Africa and Its Explorers, Vol. 1 At this moment Africa is the one quarter of the world which has not been made too much of for new-comers to make a little more. Asia is occupied. America 'is for the Americans. Europe is overflowing. Even Australia, in spite of the space it occupies upon the map, has little land fit for cultivation which is not already owned. Excerpt from Africa, Vol. 1 of 2: From South to North, Through Marotseland Although the first or introductory chapter of these volumes contains sufficient prefatory matter to acquaint the reader with the objects and organisation of the expedition under discussion, a Short supplementary preface written on the eve of publica tion may not be regarded as waste of space. Fortunately in the book of travel popular notions do not demand any very high order of literary art. The leniency of the public in this direction is no doubt in a measure due to the fact that the exigencies of an explorer's life largely deprive him of the absorbing interests of the library and the study. Yet the pen is inseparably bound up with the more strenuous exer tions in the field, unless indeed discovery and a knowledge of the more inaccessible parts of the earth are to remain a mere matter of selfish and personal interest. To write an account of such an expedition as that which it was my good fortune to control from 1898 to 1900 is not in it self a difficult task. The difficulty arises with the necessity to confine the description within reasonable limits - to decide how much of the personal element may with advantage be discarded, and how much is necessary to convey to the reader a clear pic ture of the countries traversed, the characteristics of the tribes encountered, and the general conditions which the future traveller may expect to share with the author. Thus a few days' experience will in places be found to absorb a whole chapter, while in other instances three or four hundred miles are disposed of in almost as many words. Excerpt from Africa and the Discovery of America, Vol. 1 While working on a Comparative Grammar of Ameri can Languages, I was confronted with a number of words which seemed to observe perfectly the phonetic laws, indicative of extreme old age, and yet were obviously introductions from Europe after the discovery of America. I intended to deal with this phenomenon in half a dozen pages, when it occurred to me that the cul tural influences of Europe upon the Indian languages needed a far more thorough examination than they had been subjected to. When I began my scrutiny, I was firmly convinced, as is the universal belief, that tobacco, manioc, yams, sweet potatoes and peanuts were bless ings bestowed upon the world by the Indians. A cursory study excluded the yams and the manioc. Soon the peanuts followed in their wake. Next came the sweet potatoes, and at last the tobacco. It turned out that American archaeology was to a great extent built on sand. But the most painful discovery was in the line of Indian religion. Here everything turned out to be topsy-turvy. In this first volume I show that the Negroes have had a far greater influence upon American civilization than has heretofore been suspected. In the second volume I shall chiefly study the African fetichism, which, even with the elaborate books on the subject, is wofully misunderstood, and I shall show by docu mentary evidence to what extraordinary extent the Indian medicine-man owes his evolution to the African medicine-man, who, in his turn, derives his wisdom from the popular Arabic medical science and religion.
