Among the most important acquisitions must be mentioned three portraits by Frans Hats (purchased in 1881 and a study of a head by Rembrandt, dating from his best time, and which became the property of the state in 1891, and a view on the shore by Simon de Vlieger. In 1896 the beautifully painted, Linnet of Carel Fabritius returned to its native country; in 1897 a fine work of Adriaen Brouwer was purchased.
