DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The Bennington Battle Monument and Centennial Celebration: A Statement of the Bennington Historical Society in Relation to These and Kindred Objects; To Which Is Added an Account of the Battle of Bennington In the year 1853, an effort was made to erect a monument here in commemoration of the Battle of Bennington. The legislature passed an act appropriating $3000 for the purpose. On condition that $7000 more should be raised from other sources before the appropriation should become available. A commission was named in the act, consisting of several of our most prominent citizens, and also of distinguished men in other parts of the State. But the conditions imposed were such that nothing came of the movement. Now, however, it is felt that the near approach of the centennial anniversary, not only of the battle, but of Vermont's independence as a state, and the centennial movement generally, will Operate favorably on a second attempt to build a battle monument here. It is thought the state would largely increase its proposed appropria tion of 1853, and that. Too, on easier conditions.
