Lowell A. Levant had the twin vocations of poet and truck driver. He rose to prominence in Berkeley in the '60's as a member of the Artists, Musicians, Poets, and Sympathizers Local of the I.W.W., whose work was collected in Poems Read in the Spirit of Peace and Gladness. Readers will notice four main qualities of his poems. First, as observed by his mentor, Pulitzer Prize winning poet Gary Snyder, there is "... the complex depth of his writing about work, machinery, trucks, equipment, repair, maintenance---all in a deceptively slightly befuddled voice that masks the surprising competence of what's being actually done." Second, there is attunement with nature, characteristic of "Deep Ecology" poetry. Third, there is music, which he also created when he played a Jew's harp, sang, or strummed his guitar. Finally, Lowell's poetry often took the form of the unfiltered, unfettered, free-associative declarations of the Beat Poets of his time, particularly those of Allen Ginsberg, whom Lowell admired.

John Lewis's experiences with SNCC or Rosellen Brown's at Tougaloo College are moral light years removed from P.J. O'Rourke's hilarious encounter with the Balto Cong in Baltimore. It requires mind expansion to imagine Peter Najarian's first exposure to the counterculture in San Francisco as contemporaneous with Richard Currey's initiation into killing in Vietnam.

Adsits Poetry Anthology, Volume I presents a collection of three generations of American poetry from the Adsit family, written by Tim Adsit, his parents, and his grandmother. This unique anthology contains inspirational poetry with recurring themes focusing on wilderness, the nature of man, family, home, love, life, death, faith, patriotism, country, humor, and emotions, as well as personal thoughts and reflections gained while outdoors hunting, hiking, camping, and fishing. With these inspiring thoughts and poetic images, the Adsit family brings us immediately into the beautiful world of nature and human nature. Relaxed, warmly intimate, and sometimes humorous, these verses reveal the inspiring world of nature that provides insight into what we are as human beings; what attitudes and beliefs we should take toward life, its Creator, death, and faith; and the way in which we should mature and develop daily in wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and humility. Each poet at once sees connections between the creatures and situations in nature, and in the opportunities in our own lives. They each have a genuine gift for discovering and presenting new ideas in refreshing ways showing that there is a stillness in nature that speaks louder than a choir of voices.

This is a complete, year-long programming guide that shows librarians how to integrate nonfiction and poetry into storytime for preschool children in order to build literacy skills and overall knowledge. The right nonfiction titles—ones with colorful photographs and facts that are interesting to young imaginations—give librarians an opportunity to connect with children who are yearning for "true stuff." Presenting poetry in storytime encourages a love of language and the chance to play with words. Written by authors with a combined 25 years of experience working with children and books in a library setting, Get Real With Storytime: 52 Weeks of Early Literacy Programming goes far beyond the typical storytime resource book by providing books and great ideas for using nonfiction and poetry with preschool children. This book provides a complete, year-long programming guide for librarians who work with preschool children in public libraries and school librarians who run special programs for preschoolers as well as parents, childcare providers, and camp counselors. Each of the 52 broad storytime topics (one for each week of the year) includes a sample storytime featuring an opening poem; a nonfiction title; picture books; songs, rhymes, or fingerplays; and a follow-up activity. Early literacy tips that are based on the authors' extensive experience and the principles of Every Child Ready to Read (ECRR) are presented throughout the book.
