Excerpt from A Plea for Greater Unity He has been rejoiced to find that many others have been thinking earnestly and deeply along these lines. He has found indeed that unity is considerably in the air. In the prepara tion of this volume he has felt free to use the fine and vigorous expressions of conviction made by others on special phases of the discussion, and has interspersed the volume with numerous quotations. He has done this not only because others were saying things better than he could, but also to indicate the vigor. Excerpt from Church and Congregation: Plea for Their Unity Congregationalism will dare to consign to God's dis pleasure and to future woe any persons simply be cause they have not accepted the elements? Why, a man like Kane who has made himself emphatically the person of our day, whom we know not whether to call hero or saint, Christian indeed as he was, yet such technically by right of birth and baptism alone - would on this principle be among the lost, instead Of making north pole and tropic town alike two Of the long steps by which all his earth-wandering be came the straightest and most direct road to highest heaven. Excerpt from The Price of Unity I have committed the following pages to the press with much hesitation and some misgivings. They were begun some three or four years ago and then laid aside, as it seemed to me a thankless task to add one more to the many books already written on the subject. Controversial books seem generally to have the effect rather of rousing the animosity of those for whom they have been written, than of convincing them. They look out for flaws in the arguments, and are often disedified by language that sounds harsh in their ears, even though it be used only for the purpose of clear statement of fact, and are antagonized by what appears to them a lack of fairness in the statement of their position. And these books are sure to call forth answers, and thus deepen the antagonism and bitterness, and end, perhaps, in setting people farther apart, rather than in drawing them together. Excerpt from If Christ Came to Chicago: A Plea for the Union of All Who Love, in the Service of All Who Suffer Seventy thousand copies of this volume were ordered in America before a single copy was issued from the press in Chicago. Owing to my refusal to allow any but Union labour to be employed in producing the book, the binders were at first unable to cope with the demand. But as I did not think that 'If Christ came to Chicago' He would go to sweat shops for His printing, the public had to wait till the Union binderies overtook the demand. The opportune refusal of the American News Company and the Union News Company to handle the book until the Black List was cut out somewhat relieved the pressure. As the Companies possess an absolute monopoly of sale on all the railways in the United States, I cut out the list. I did this the more readily because the interest in the Black List was so strictly local to Chicago that I did not think it would be worth while reproducing it in the present Edition. The difficulty of meeting the American demand renders it impossible to procure copies from Chicago in time to supply the English market. I have therefore reprinted it on this side; and this volume, written in Chicago, printed in Edinburgh, and published in London, is typical of the unity of the English-speaking world. It is perhaps hardly necessary for me to say more than a word in presenting this book to the readers in the Old World. Nothing can be further from the mark than to represent it as an attack upon Chicago. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
