Excerpt from A History of Winchester College This is the first attempt at a connected and complete history of Winchester College and School "from the earliest times to the present day." The compression of the history of five hundred years into five hundred small pages is no easy task. Opinions will doubtless differ as to whether certain periods and certain aspects of the School life in that period have been treated in too great or too little detail. In all, I have endeavoured to go to first-hand evidence or first-class authorities, in spite of considerable obstruction in some quarters where it was least expected. Winchester being regarded as the origin and fountain head of the great system of Public School education, a considerable, though not, it is hoped, an undue amount of, space has been given to the ascertainment of its true place in the history of English education, and its relations to prior schools in general and those of Winchester in particular. If new light has been shed on this matter, I have to express my gratitude to the Very Reverend W. R. W. Stephens, Dean of Winchester, for the exceptional facilities afforded me of access to and use of the Cathedral records; and to the Rev. F. T. Madge, the librarian, for much information. Excerpt from Wykehamica, a History of Winchester College and Commoners: From the Foundation to the Present Day The authorities, written and oral, from whom I have learned the particulars contained in the following pages, are mainly as follows: - For the history and description of Winchester - Milner, Woodward, and T. Warton, together with some ancient maps of the town. For the life of the Founder - the biographies of Chaundler, Martin, and Lowth; also the old records in New College and Winchester libraries. For the description and history of the College from its foundation to the eighteenth century - Cockerell's "Essay on William of Wykeham," the old records of the College, Wilkins's "Concilia," Dugdale's "Monasticon," and occasionally, Strype. For the records of Old Commoners before Dr. Burton's time, I am chiefly indebted to the researches of F. J. Baigent, Esq., of Winchester. I desire also to acknowledge the valuable information he has given me on other points. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Winchester College: 1393 1893 That Wykeham was a man of genius, his architectural works are sufficient to prove. His buildings at Windsor Castle and his colleges are not Seen by us as he left them, but enough is seen to command just admiration; and his transformation of the nave of Winchester Cathedral from the Norman to the earlier Perpendicular style is a wonderful performance, which, if I might trust my own judgment, I Should place above all the rest.
