Excerpt from A Guide to the Victoria History of the Counties of England The object of this introduction is mainly to direct the attention of contributors to certain general rules which should be scrupulously observed by them in any work they may undertake for the Victoria County History.' The essential facts to be borne in mind by every writer are (a) that the present work concerns itself with local and not with national history and (e) that as the various sections are contributed by different persons it is absolutely necessary that each writer should be most careful to confine his work strictly within the limits of his own subject. Every contributor should read the separate instructions for each section of the history, and before submitting his article to the general editors should carefully revise what he has written with a view of seeing that it has been kept within the limits of local history and has not encroached on subjects other than his own. The style adopted by all the contributors should be as concise and simple as possible and strict accuracy should be maintained. Imaginative descriptions of circumstances and scenes should be avoided. So far as possible no definite statements should be made for which some original authority cannot be given in a footnote (unless such state ments are made from personal observation). While every reasonable means should be used to clear up points of uncertainty and difficulty, if those means fail it should be stated that investigation has failed to yield the required information at the same time a suggested solution of a difficulty may be given. Difficulties should be submitted to the general editors for advice. English forms of personal names, both surnames and christian names, should as far as possible be used. With regard to these, translations of the more important Latin and French forms of those used in England will be found in Appendices Nos. IV. And V. These volumes provide an essential comprehensive work of reference for the annual municipal elections that took place each November in the 83 County Boroughs of England and Wales between 1919 and 1938. They also provide an extensive and detailed analysis of municipal politics in the same period, both in terms of the individual boroughs and of aggregate patterns of political behaviour. Being annual, these local election results give the clearest and most authoritative record of how political opinion changed between general elections, especially useful for research into the longer gaps such as 1924 - 29 and 1935 - 45, or crisis periods such as 1929 - 31. They also illuminate the impact of fringe parties such as the Communist Party and the British Union of Fascists, and also such questions as the role of women in politics, the significance of religious and ethnic differentiation and the connection between occupational and class divisions and party allegiance. Analysis at the ward level is particularly useful for socio-spatial studies. 1919 - 1938 is indispensable for university libraries and local and national record offices. Each volume has approximately 700 pages.

English Historical Documents is the most ambitious, impressive and comprehensive collection of documents on English history ever published. An authoritative work of primary evidence, each volume presents material with exemplary scholarly accuracy. Editorial comment is directed towards making sources intelligible rather than drawing conclusions from them. Full account has been taken of modern textual criticism. A general introduction to each volume portrays the character of the period under review and critical bibliographies have been added to assist further investigation. Documents collected include treaties, personal letters, statutes, military dispatches, diaries, declarations, newspaper articles, government and cabinet proceedings, orders, acts, sermons, pamphlets, agricultural instructions, charters, grants, guild regulations and voting records. Volumes are furnished with lavish extra apparatus including genealogical tables, lists of officials, chronologies, diagrams, graphs and maps.
