DOWNLOAD EBOOKThis book describes how the various alien reptiles and amphibians now living in the wild throughout the world were first introduced, how they subsequently became naturalized, their present distribution and status in those countries to which they were introduced, and their ecological and socio-economic impact on the native biota and local economies. Many species have had a more or less neutral impact, being neither beneficial nor harmful. However, several have had a positive ecological or socio-economic impact, while some such as the cane toad, have had an extremely destructive effect. The criteria for inclusion of a species are that it should have been imported from its natural range to a new country by human agency--either accidentally or deliberately--and that it should currently be established in the wild in self-maintaining and self-perpetuating populations unsupported by and independent of mankind.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKNew species of animal and plant are being discovered all the time. When this happens, the new species has to be given a scientific, Latin name in addition to any common, vernacular name. In either case the species may be named after a person, often the discoverer but sometimes an individual they wished to honour or perhaps were staying with at the time the discovery was made. Species names related to a person are ‘eponyms’. Many scientific names are allusive, esoteric and even humorous, so an eponym dictionary is a valuable resource for anyone, amateur or professional, who wants to decipher the meaning and glimpse the history of a species name. Sometimes a name refers not to a person but to a fictional character or mythological figure. The Forest Stubfoot Toad Atelopus farci is named after the FARC, a Colombian guerrilla army who found refuge in the toad’s habitat and thereby, it is claimed, protected it. Hoipollo's Bubble-nest Frog Pseudophilautus hoipolloi was named after the Greek for ‘the many’, but someone assumed the reference was to a Dr Hoipollo. Meanwhile, the man who has everything will never refuse an eponym: Sting's Treefrog Dendropsophus stingi is named after the rock musician, in honour of his ‘commitment and efforts to save the rainforest’. Following the success of their Eponym Dictionary of Reptiles, the authors have joined forces to give amphibians a similar treatment. They have tracked down 1,609 honoured individuals and composed for each a brief, pithy biography. In some cases these are a reminder of the courage of scientists whose dedicated research in remote locations exposed them to disease and even violent death. The eponym ensures that their memory will survive, aided by reference works such as this highly readable dictionary. Altogether 2,668 amphibians are listed.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKReptiles and Amphibians of Australia is a complete guide to Australia’s rich and varied herpetofauna, including frogs, crocodiles, turtles, tortoises, lizards and snakes. For each of the 1218 species there is a description of its appearance, distribution and habits. These descriptions are also accompanied by distribution maps and, in many cases, one of the book's more than 1000 colour photographs of living animals. The book also includes 130 simple-to-use dichotomous keys, accompanied by hundreds of explanatory drawings, that in most cases allow a specimen in hand to be identified. In addition, it has a comprehensive list of scientific references for those wishing to conduct more in-depth research, an extensive glossary, and basic guides to the collection, preservation and captive care of specimens. This classic work was originally published in 1975. The updated seventh edition contains a new Appendix that discusses recent changes and lists over 80 new or resurrected species and genera that have been added to the Australian frog and reptile fauna since the 2014 edition.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKWelcome to Amphibians of the World: The Nature Lover's Life List. It is the first and most beautiful (unillustrated) listing in print of all 7539 kinds of these creatures. Perhaps the most striking feature of Amphibians of the World will be its NEW LEXICON OF PROPOSED ENGLISH NAMES. For the first time in any major worldwide group, a comprehensive and systematic approach to common naming has been applied. The reader is encouraged to give feedback for future editions. Amphibians of the World is the only book to the all the Earth's amphibians which marries the useful combination of ENGLISH COMMON NAMES (for subspecies, too), SCIENTIFIC NAMES and their AUTHORSHIP/DATE, RANGE DESCRIPTIONS (where they live) and other features for those creatures that have them, such as I. U. C. N. conservation codes, introduced ranges, medical notes, etc. Also provided are sections on How to Use this Book, amphibian relationships, timeclips, sources, and no less than three Indexes and/or Cross-references. The student of these animals will be well served. It is shocking that this most basic combination of amphibian data has taken so long to appear in print. Birds and mammals have been graced with their own full-data checklists for years. Short essays on the logic underlying the author's take on the art of English common naming for these animals, the hobby of Herptiling, conservation and field ethics and what scientific classification may be saying about humankind's place in nature round out this presentation. As this is the hobby-oriented, Nature Lover's, version of this book (not just a 'scientific checklist'), it has a 'box' (actually a lozenge) to MARK YOUR SIGHTINGS, places to write in WHEN and WHERE YOU SAW AN ANIMAL, all in in a user-friendly format. The Date-Seen entry can be applied in either of two places in the life list to make room for longer locality data, where needed. Though the approach taken gives the specialist all her or his core 'bells and whistles', the focus of this effort is the general public. Think of this work as a sort of 'People's Listing' of these fellow travelers on our planet. Nature Paperback 8 1/2 x 11" (white Paper) 573 pages (plus cover)
