This multi-disciplinary anthology is about hermeneutical issues pertaining to gender ideology in university scholarship. The authors provide, from their own discipline, an extensive examination of the issues raised in the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada pamphlet, "On the Treatment of the Sexes in Research," by Margrit Eichler and Jeanne Lapointe (1985). Gender bias is described and evaluated in the light of possible alternative perspectives which would alter the content and shape of research, including women as subjects of research and as researchers. The authors underscore the importance of acknowledging underlying gender imagery in the selection, interpretation, and communication of research data. They explore the notion of research as a social construction which is strongly aligned with the socially constructed notion of male and dissociated from the socially constructed notion of female. The focus is on refraining research ideology to include both female- and male-constructed imagery. Marchak argues that liberalism and socialism have many commonalities, such as the goals of equality and freedom for citizens. Corporatism, however, is opposed to equality and promotes an authoritarian hierarchy, resembling the older conservative ideology. To support her argument, Marchak provides a general overview of the study of ideologies, analyzes liberalism and socialism in the context of Canada, and uses Marxist theory to explain past and present class structure and the emergence of a corporatist social structure. A valuable contribution to the debate about the society we live in, Ideological Perspectives on Canada attempts to look at ideologies from an objective standpoint, while admitting that analysts can never fully remove themselves from the web of their own society, which in the Canadian case is steeped in liberalism, socialism, and corporatism.

The 1971 Supplement adds some 3,500 entries to the approximately 7,000 listed in the original volume and the 1965 Supplement. Like its predecessors this volume provides a full list of the secondary sources related to Canadian higher education – books, articles, theses, dissertations, and reports published from 1964 to 1969. The reporting and arrangement of entries remains the same in the Supplement, but changes have been made in the overall organization of the material. New divisions have been created, more than a dozen sections have been subdivided, and a substantial number of new sections have been added. (Studies in Higher Education 5)
