"What is the relevance of the area studies approach to Southeast Asia?" The current state and future directions of area studies, of which Southeast Asian studies are a part, is a central question not only to scientists working in the field but also those engaged in university politics. This collection of nine articles is written by specialists from different disciplinary backgrounds and working in institutions of higher learning all around the world. It provides an up-to-date insight into the current state of the study field, its strengths and weaknesses and seeks ways to reconfigure Southeast Asian studies in order to meet the challenges of a region that is caught up in profound transformation as a consequence of both globalization and localization.

Over 5,000 entries arranged in four parts. Part I comprises reference and general works to provide a guide to information on Southeast Asia. Part II provides the setting of space and time. Part III features the people and Part IV the many facets of culture and society — language; ideas, beliefs, values; institutions; creative expression; and social and cultural change. Within each section, the arrangement is geographical, beginning with Southeast Asia as a whole followed by the various countries in alphabetical order.
Progress in ASEAN economic cooperaion has been limited when compared to cooperation in the political arena. Accordingly, the ASEAN Economic Research Unit of the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies organized a colloquium with the objective of bringing the knowledge and experience of the regional and international scholarly community to bear on the opportunities and problems ahead for ASEAN, particularly with regard to trade and investment. This volume contains the proposal for ASEAN economic cooperation emanating from the meeting as well as the background paper discussed by the participants. Copies of the work were subsequently sent to all senior ASEAN officials including the High Level Steering Committee for the ASEAN Summit and the Group of 14.
This book employs alternative approaches to authoritarianism, power, domination and political identity in contemporary Indonesia. It seeks to clarify the relationship between knowledge and 'real' politics. Drawing upon the thought of Edward Said and Michel Foucault, the text argues that understandings of Indonesian political life are profoundly shaped by particular approaches to culture, tradition, ethnicity, Cold War politics and modernity. Power, domination and the effects of authoritarianism on identity are key areas of discussion in this innovative and topical analysis of Indonesia and the study of its politics.
