First Published in 1998. Irish traditional music is one of the richest treasuries of folk music in the world. Being an oral tradition, much of it has already been lost, and what has been recorded is only partially available in isolated collections. Until now, no composite picture has yet been presented, showing its remarkable range and diversity over four centuries. This volume covers Irish materials in general collections up to 1800 and in Irish collections up to and including Petrie's Ancient Music of Ireland (1855).The purposes of the project are to identify Irish dance tunes and songs; to present the scholar with a mass of material showing the evolution of the Irish vocal and instrumental folk style, period by period, from the earliest recorded tune up to the middle of the last century; to put into circulation many of the splendid airs which were lost but have now been located. Some 6,000 songs and dance tunes are presented, also including Scottish and English tunes. Included are Scottish tunes that were used by 18th-century Irish poets for their verses, and both English and Scottish tunes that are still current among Irish traditional musicians. Tunes of present-day currency which do not seem to be included may still be located by comparing their first 12 notes in the thematic index at the end of the volume. To make the vast array of material readily available, an index allows readers to locate a tune by its melodic incipit, by any of its titles, or by the first line of its text. Unfortunately, the vast majority of Irish songs noted up to the end of the last century lack texts, since the collectors were ignorant of the Irish language. But almost every other facet is covered-provenance, tonality structure, and variants.

Pointed Encounters establishes the literary significance of representations of dance in poetry, song, dance manuals, and fiction written between 1750 and 1830. Presenting original readings of canonical texts and fresh readings of neglected but significant literary works, this book traces the complicated role of social dancing in Scottish culture and identifies the hitherto unexplored motif of dance as an outwardly conforming, yet covertly subversive, expression of Scottish identity during the period. The volume draws upon diverse yet mutually revealing texts, from traditional dance and music to Sir Walter Scott and contemporary Scottish women novelists, to offer students and scholars of Scottish and English literature a fresh insight into the socio-cultural context of the British state after 1746.

A growing number of folk players have adopted the silver flute as a viable alternative to the wooden simple-system flute. Mel Bay's Scottish Flute Collection is written for the classical flutist who wishes to concretize traditional Scottish music. The collection includes jigs, reels, into sets to provide length and diversity in the performance setting. Simple ceili-style piano arrangements highlight the flute and encourage the practice of ornamenting in a traditional style. Both an ornamented and unornamented version of each tune is included in the flute score along with guitar chords. This flexibility makes the collection useful for many purposes: as concert/recital programming,as a folk music resource book, as works for the study and practice of traditional ornamentation and as etudes for the developing flutist. Flutists wishing to perform traditional Scottish music will find this collection a must for the repertoire. An accompaniment online audio guides the player through the performance of traditional ornaments in the first set. Players hear the performance of notated ornaments such as the cut, long roll and short roll and learn to apply and aurally interpret the remaining ornamented sets provided in the book. A play-along ceili-style piano accompaniment track is included for all pieces in the book. A great way to enjoy Scottish tunes and learn traditional performance practice at the same time! Includes access to online audio.
