This edited collection of original essays examines pride from a variety of perspectives in philosophy, psychology, sociology and anthropology. Our understanding of Smith is improved and expanded by reading Jane Austen because she bring his insights to life and adds insights of her own. Of the seven deadly sins, pride is the only one with a virtuous side. It is certainly a good thing to have pride in one's country, in one's community, in oneself. But when taken too far, as Michael Eric Dyson shows in Pride, these virtues become deadly sins. This study is an attempt to uncover the structure of three emotion concepts: anger, pride and love. The results indicate that the conceptual structure associated with these emotions consists of four parts: (1) a system of metaphors, (2) a system of metonymies, (3) a system of related concepts, and (4) a category of cognitive models, with a prototypical model in the center. This goes against an influential view of the structure of concepts in linguistics, psychology, anthropology, according to which the structure of a concept can be represented by a small number of sense components.

Pride is pervasive in Roman texts, as an emotion and a political and social concept implicated in ideas of power. This study examines Roman discourse of pride from two distinct complementary perspectives. The first is based on scripts, mini-stories told to illustrate what pride is, how it arises and develops, and where it fits within the Roman emotional landscape. The second is semantic, and draws attention to differences between terms within the pride field. The peculiar feature of Roman pride that emerges is that it appears exclusively as a negative emotion, attributed externally and condemned, up to the Augustan period. This previously unnoticed lack of expression of positive pride in republican discourse is a result of the way the Roman republican elite articulates its values as anti-monarchical and is committed, within the governing class, to power-sharing and a kind of equality. The book explores this uniquely Roman articulation of pride attributed to people, places, and institutions and traces the partial rehabilitation of pride that begins in the texts of the Augustan poets at the time of great political change. Reading for pride produces innovative readings of texts that range from Plautus to Ausonius, with major focus on Cicero, Livy, Vergil, and other Augustan poets.
Father Charles Hugo Doyle presents spiritual conferences to nuns (adaptable also for use in religious communities of men) on the virtues of humility, purity and the love of God. Most of the conferences are on humility and its opposed vice of pride. The Gospels, the saints and spiritual writers are drawn on, particularly St. Thomas, St. Bernard and St. Benedict. Although doctrine is expounded, the talks are basically practical and directly addressed to the present situations of religious life. The author stresses the dire effects of the offshoots of pride, presumption, envy, vainglory, boastfulness, hypocrisy, disobedience and discord. He distinguishes pride from legitimate self-esteem and desire for the esteem of others, and suggests concrete tests for the detection of pride in complex human motivations.
