DOWNLOAD EBOOKExcerpt from The History of the St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Maytown, Lancaster Co., Pa., 1765-1904 Nothing useless is, or low; Each thing in its place is best; And what seems but idle show, Strengthens and supports the rest. When the Committee on Historical Research was appointed, it was thought that a week's work would be sufficient to write the history of this old and historic church. That things are not always what they seem, this book amply proves. For in stead of one week, it required many months of laborious research and the reading of many old German records unthought of at first. As the writer delved beneath the surface for facts, which had to be authenicated to make this history reliable, he was confronted by most perplexing problems in the form of conflicting dates, incomplete records, etc., which could only be made correct by a thorough search and study of the records of the other churches in this charge whose history is identical with that of the Maytown Lutheran Church. While the writer was searching for records in the Trinity Church of Lancaster, Pa., through the courtesy of its pastor, Rev. John E. Whitteker.
