Excerpt from An Account of the New-York Hospital In consequence of the recommendation of the medical facula ty of Columbia College, the governors of the hospital, in August, 1796, appropriated the sum of 500 dollars towards the purchase of a medical library; to which the members of that faculty contributed books from their private libraries, and part of their fees of public instruction. An hosp'ital library was thus established, which was further augmented by the purchase of the medical library of Dr. Romayne, in 1800, and by the accession, in 1805, of the library of a private associa tion of physicians, under the name of the Medical Society of new-york, who gave their books, on condition, that they and such of their sons, as should become practitioners of medi cine ia the city of new-york, should have the free use of the hospital library. In 1805 the governors appropriated the an nual sum of 250 dollars, for the purchase of books and large additions have been made to it, by purchases and donations, from time to time; so that, including the valuable botanical library of Dr. Hosack, lately purchased, the Hospital library now contains about volumes, among which are some of the rarest and most valuable works in medical science. Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Report of the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York, Vol. 6: January, 1904 The alarming prevalence of acute lobar pneumonia in all seasons of the year and in all periods of life from infancy to old age, and the front rank it has attained in mortality statistics as the cause of death, are facts which demand the most careful attention and study from the medical profession. Although the subject is old, and statistics are at hand from many sources, the importance of the disease is always new and present, and some facts of interest may be deduced from a review of a considerable number of cases which have been carefully examined and Observed. Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Report of the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York, Vol. 2: January, 1897 With regard to the incision in the abdominal wall, some prefer a vertical one in or to the right or left of the semilunaris to this has been added such transverse ones as conditions met with in the oper ation might appear to indicate. Ido not remember to have used the vertical one myself, having always preferred the obliquely trans verse incision of Courvoisier. It affords abundance of space, and beginning near the semilunar line, it may be carried back as far as is necessary for drainage in those cases that may require it but I should scarcely think it would often be desirable to extend it as far back into the loin as advised by Morrison. It has been objected to these transverse incisions that they invite hernial protrusions of the hollow viscera. Morrison says he was indebted to Dr. John Dun can, of Edinburgh, for the knowledge that transverse incisions in this region give better access and are less liable to be followed by ventral hernia. Excerpt from Base Hospital No; 9, A. E. F: A History of the Work of the New York Hospital Unit, During Two Years of Active Service To write a complete history of the Unit which went out from the New York Hospital to serve in the Great War would require superhuman genius. An all-seeing eye, an all-hearing ear, an ever-flowing pen and a sleepless body would be only a partial equipment for the task. From the day that the organization mobilized until the time when it heard the joyful words, "Well done thou good and faithful servant, enter thou into the joys of civilian life" things were happening both day and night. Many of these things have never been recorded. Many were known only to a few, many are known only as rumors and many are family secrets and never should be told. However, some things should be known and these things the historian will record as facts in this book." The material has been gathered from personal observation and a "war regulation diary," from reports supplied by the heads of the different departments, from the file in the hospital office and from various memoranda that chanced into the writer's hand. To Dr. G. W. Zulauf, who assisted in the collecting of the material, and to Dr. Ralph Stillman, who read and offered valuable criticism and suggestions, I am deeply grateful. Excerpt from Medical and Surgical Report of the Presbyterian Hospital in the City of New York, Vol. 10: October, 1918 To bring this about the system described elsewhere by Dr. Auchincloss was devised at the Presbyterian Hospital and has been a success. By this method additions can be made to the histories from time to time, either as follow-up notes or on subsequent admis sions to the hospital and as this history serves as a permanent, ever increasing record of an individual in his or her relationship as a patient of the hospital, it has been conveniently termed a unit.
