This volume celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Society for Medieval Archaeology (established in 1957), presenting reflections on the history, development and future prospects of the discipline. The papers are drawn from a series of conferences and workshops that took place in 2007-08, in addition to a number of contributions that were commissioned especially for the volume. They range from personal commentaries on the history of the Society and the growth of the subject (see papers by David Wilson and Rosemary Cramp), to historiographical, regional and thematic overviews of major trends in the evolution and current practice of medieval archaeology. All the publications are fully refereed with the aim of publishing at the highest academic level reports on sites of national and international importance, and of encouraging the widest debate. The series’ objectives are to cover the broadest chronological and geographical range and to assemble a series of volumes which reflect the changing intellectual and technical scope of the discipline.
Volume II considers the history of the European Union from an inside-out perspective, focusing on the internal developments that shaped the European integration process. Taking an innovative, thematic approach, this volume will be of interest to students and researchers of European integration.
This book is not a conventional biography. It is not only a portrait of a larger-than-life Turkish diplomat, whose Foreign Service career spanned almost four decades – from 1941 to 1979 – but also offers a glimpse into the evolution of the organization of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and provides an account of the attitudes and methods of the Ministry’s officials. A good biography should cast light upon its subject’s times as well as his – or her – life; upon the way things were done, as much as upon the way a particular individual reacted and behaved. As such, in this book, not only is Zeki Kuneralp the man addressed but also the great developments of his time are explored extensively. The book blends biographical narrative with explorations of various aspects of the foreign policy issues with which Kuneralp was involved. The book treats in detail the major problems with which Kuneralp was directly concerned at each of his postings: that is, meeting the right people abroad, promoting Turkish interests, reporting to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, subordinating local matters to the political and economic goals of Turkey, and conducting diplomacy so as always to be in accord with Ankara’s policy makers, whose big picture he always kept in mind.
In 2007, the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe, the representative and the voice of local and regional authorities throughout the continent, celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of its creation. What is the relevance of contemporary debates over emergency powers for countries situated in Asia? What role does, and should, the constitution play in constraining these powers? The essays in this collection address these issues, drawing on emergency situations in over 20 countries in Asia as a ready-made laboratory for exploring the relationship between emergency powers and constitutionalism. Public health is of concern to practicing chiropractors, as well as chiropractic students. The vast majority of chiropractors utilize public health concepts every day as an integral part of patient care. For instance, they give advice on risk factors that should be avoided and protective factors to be added by their patients to enhance healing and prevent illness. Pubic health is also part of the curriculum at all chiropractic colleges and is tested by the National Board. No public health textbooks are available that are specifically designed for the chiropractor. Consequently, college instructors are forced to make-do with class notes and generic texts that do not address the specific issues relevant to chiropractic.
