Experimental Robotics XV is the collection of papers presented at the International Symposium on Experimental Robotics, Roppongi, Tokyo, Japan on October 3-6, 2016. 73 scientific papers were selected and presented after peer review. The papers span a broad range of sub-fields in robotics including aerial robots, mobile robots, actuation, grasping, manipulation, planning and control and human-robot interaction, but shared cutting-edge approaches and paradigms to experimental robotics. This book addresses the topic of autonomous flying robots physically interacting with the environment under the influence of wind. It aims to make aerial robots aware of the disturbance, interaction, and faults acting on them. This requires reasoning about the external wrench (force and torque) acting on the robot and distinguishing between wind, interactions, and collisions. The book takes a model-based approach and covers a systematic approach to parameter identification for flying robots. The book aims to provide a wind speed estimate independent of the external wrench, including estimating the wind speed using motor power measurements. Aerodynamics modeling is approached in a data-driven fashion, using ground-truth measurements from a 4D wind tunnel. Finally, the book bridges the gap between trajectory tracking and interaction control, to allow physical interaction under wind influence. Theoretical results are accompanied by extensive simulation and experimental results.
This book introduces a novel model-based dexterous manipulation framework, which, thanks to its precision and versatility, significantly advances the capabilities of robotic hands compared to the previous state of the art. This is achieved by combining a novel grasp state estimation algorithm, the first to integrate information from tactile sensing, proprioception and vision, with an impedance-based in-hand object controller, which enables leading manipulation capabilities, including finger gaiting. The developed concept is implemented on one of the most advanced robotic manipulators, the DLR humanoid robot David, and evaluated in a range of challenging real-world manipulation scenarios and tasks.
