On September 11, 1857, a band of Mormon militia, under a flag of truce, lured unarmed members of a party of emigrants from their fortified encampment and, with their Paiute allies, killed them. Joseph Whiteley (1754-1818), the son of Joseph Whiteley, Sr., and Mary Plumbley, was born in England. His widowed father brought him to America ca. 1758, and he eventually settled in Tennessee. He married Sarah Stapleton (ca. 1760-1836) ca. 1775. They had fourteen children. Descendants live throughout the United States.
