Toril Moi is James B. Duke Professor of Literature and Romance Studies at Duke University. Her books include Sexual/Textual Politics: Feminist Literary Theory, Simone de Beauvoir: The Making of an Intellectual Woman and What Is a Woman? And Other Essays. Christopher Norris is Distinguished Research Professor in Philosophy at the University of Cardiff. He has published some twenty books to date, including, most recently, Deconstruction and the Unfinished Project of Modernity, Quantum Theory and the Flight from Realism, Truth Matters: Realism, Anti-Realism, and Response-Dependence, and Hilary Putnam: Reason, Realism, and the Uses of Uncertainty.

So Disdained is set in Italy during the 1930s. The story follows the character of Stephen Fletcher, an English engineer who is sent to Italy to work on a new project. Fletcher becomes involved in a dangerous game of espionage, as he is recruited by a British intelligence agent to gather information about an Italian weapons manufacturer. Along the way, Fletcher falls in love with a beautiful Italian woman named Marta, who becomes instrumental in his mission. However, as Fletcher becomes increasingly entangled in his role as a spy, he begins to question the morality of his actions and the motives of those around him. The novel explores themes of loyalty, betrayal, love, and the political tensions of pre-World War II Europe. Ultimately, Fletcher must decide where his loyalties lie and what he is willing to risk for the sake of his beliefs and those he cares about.

Angle of Yaw investigates the fate of public space, public speech, and how the technologies of viewing—aerial photography in particular—feed our culture an image of itself. And it’s a spectacular view. The man observes the action on the field with the tiny television he brought to the stadium. He is topless, painted gold, bewigged. His exaggerated foam index finger indicates the giant screen upon which his own image is now displayed, a model of fanaticism. He watches the image of his watching the image on his portable TV on his portable TV. He suddenly stands with arms upraised and initiates the wave that will consume him. Haunted by our current “war on terror,” much of the book was written while Lerner was living in Madrid (at the time of the Atocha bombings and their political aftermath), as the author steeped himself in the history of Franco and fascism. Regardless of when or where it was written, Angle of Yaw will further establish Ben Lerner as one of our most intriguing and least predictable poets.
