The Netherlands is an AAA euro area (EA) economy with significant private sector imbalances. The main policy challenge is to restore growth and manage downside risks while allowing for an orderly adjustment of private sector balance sheets. A focus on medium-term objectives will cement policy credibility and mitigate uncertainty. The financial system must reduce its dependence on wholesale financing, and banks reliant on public sector support need to wind down this support. Reforms in the labor markets and human capital will be important in safeguarding the economy’s growth potential.

This Selected Issues paper analyzes the factors behind the unprecedented widening of India’s current account deficit in terms of the sectoral savings-investment balance. Persistently high inflation is found to have depressed real returns, prompting a surge in gold imports and a marked deterioration in household financial savings. The paper investigates inward and outward spillovers to and from India. The results show that output shocks emanating in globally systemic countries have important global effects, but their impact on India is limited. It is found that shocks originating in India have relatively small global implications, but are very important for several South Asian economies.

Down-home recipes from the best restaurants, food artisans, bakeries, and farmers across the state. Eating a hot buttered lobster roll is like taking a mini-vacation: it conjures the scent of salt in the air and the crash of waves on the rocks—the essence of a day at the beach in Maine. Now, with Real Maine Food you can re-create this humble delicacy as well as more than 100 other Maine dishes at home. Maine has developed its own distinctive regional cuisine, characterized foremost by the excellent seafood caught off its pristine coast but also by the wild blueberries, potatoes, and other produce from its rich soils. The authors take a ride on a nineteenth-century schooner, build a beach clambake, and judge a pie-eating contest at a state fair—all in search of the best recipes from accomplished small-town home cooks as well as renowned restaurants and food artisans. Among the dishes are Smoked Haddock and Leek Pie, Lobster Gruyere Grilled Cheese, Crab and Corn Frittata, Blueberry Pancakes, and Peanut Butter Whoopie Pies. Real Maine Food taps into the magic that draws visitors to the state year after year.
