Although it is a subject of immense importance to warship enthusiasts, modelmakers, photograph collectors, and indeed academic naval historians, there has never been an authoritative history of camouflage. Apart from the huge scale of the subject, the reason for this lies largely in the fragmented nature of the surviving evidence, and the ad hoc nature of much wartime development. This book does not claim to be such a narrative history, but it does set out to provide a comprehensive study. Designed and produced under the regulations of the Washington Naval Treaty, the heavy cruisers of the Pensacola, Northampton, Portland, New Orleans and Wichita classes were exercises in compromise. While they possessed very heavy armament – the Pensacolas, for example, carrying a main battery of ten 8” guns – this came at the cost of protection – armor was the same thickness as a gun cruiser, and incapable of protecting the vessels from enemy 8” fire. As the classes evolved, these flaws began to be corrected, with the main battery being reduced, and increased protection being added to the vital areas of the ship. Despite these drawbacks, the pre-war heavy cruiser classes served with distinction throughout World War II.
This is an anthology of twenty-seven World War I-era essays, by various authors, on ship camouflage from that time period. It focuses primarily on American and British camouflage, and especially on "dazzle camouflage," a counter-intuitive method in which brightly colored abstract shapes were applied to the ship's surface. The purpose of such camouflage was not low visibility, but to make it difficult to aim a torpedo at a distant, moving ship from a submerged submarine (U-boat), while peering through a periscope. The book includes 275 drawings, diagrams and vintage photographs, and a 40-page camouflage bibiliography, the largest ever.

In the early 20th century Britain's largest colonies established their own small naval presence, and their ships fought alongside the Royal Navy during World War I. These fleets were expanded during the inter-war years, and in 1939 the Royal Australian Navy, the Royal Canadian Navy and the Royal New Zealand Navy willingly joined the fight on behalf of the British Commonwealth.
