Standards have benefits particular to the field of gifted education. In order to ensure equity and systematic talent search and programming, it is essential that current and future teachers are educated in the relevant theory, research, pedagogy, and management techniques important for developing and sustaining classroom-based opportunities specifically designed for gifted learners. By incorporating the 2013 NAGC/CEC Teacher Preparation Standards in Gifted and Talented Education, this guidebook helps university faculty at the undergraduate and graduate levels design or revise gifted education programs and partner with other educators in developing gifted education teachers.
National teacher preparation standards in gifted and talented education provide the foundation for research-based practices in gifted education and identify what teachers should know and be able to do to ensure that students with gifts and talents realize their full potential. Because the responsibility for teaching gifted learners and those with potential to achieve at high levels is often shared between gifted education program leaders and teachers in general and special education classrooms, this book shows Pre-K-12 education leaders how to develop partnerships, identify professional development outcomes, design learning activities, plan and implement comprehensive training programs, and evaluate the effectiveness of professional development activities. Special attention is paid to effecting change within a state and school system. The National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), in collaboration with the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC), and the Association for the Gifted (CEC-TAG), has developed national standards for teacher preparation programs in gifted and talented education. Typically, these programs are at the masters level, but they may also be endorsement programs, or less frequently, teacher preparation programs at the undergraduate level. The programs develop expertise in gifted and talented education, which is needed in specialized programs for gifted students, and is also needed at the building and district level to coordinate programs and services. Gifted education specialists also collaborate with other educators to ensure that general education teachers are able to support advanced students in their classrooms and to refer students for further testing as part of the overall identification process. The standards are the basis for state standards in gifted education and are also used at the national level as part of the teacher preparation accreditation process. The 2013 standards include 7 standards and 28 individual elements. The previous standards were approved in 2006.

After mastering initial standards for the preparation of teachers of the gifted, many educators in gifted education continue their professional growth toward mastery of advanced professional standards at the post baccalaureate levels. For some this means deepening their understandings and expertise and adding new responsibilities for leadership within the classroom. Regardless of the specific role, educators in advanced roles share an array of functions and responsibilities in common. Reflecting this commonality, the advanced standards in gifted education were developed by standards experts at the National Association for Gifted Children, the Council for Exceptional Children, and the Association for the Gifted. These content and teacher preparation experts conducted an extensive study of advanced teaching standards, including National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, state standards, knowledge and skill standards that are expected of all special educators in advanced roles, and standards used by the Council for Accreditation of Educator Preparation as part of the school/college of education accreditation process. The adopted advanced standards contain seven standards and 28 elements.
