Excerpt from The Principles of the Religious Society of Friends and Some of Its Testimonies In sending forth this little book to the public, the writer has been actuated by no other motive or desire than to answer the many inquiries which come to him from time to time, both from those who are, and those who are not members of the Society of Friends, as to what Quakerism is; and realizing the need of answering these inquiries with such explanations as shall appeal to the thought and culture of the day, he has been induced under an apprehension of duty to write out that which his own conviction and experience have taught him to be the truth regarding it. Hence, he has endeavored to give expression to his thought upon this subject, in a form of language which he hopes will convince the rational under standing and judgment of his readers, from their present standpoint of culture, that they are practical and true, and capable of an adaptation to the spiritual needs of man, with a perfect confidence that theexperience of human life will confirm every position he has taken. With the humble hope that it may remove doubts from some minds, strengthen the convictions of others, and that all who read it may come nearer to the Divine Spirit, in thought, in hope, and in true spiritual life in the present state of existence, and strengthen the assurance that as each one lives in close obedience to the law written in the heart, there awaits us in the eternal life a glorious welcome to the Heavenly Father's mansions, he sends it forth on its mission of love and good will to men. Excerpt from Notes on the Principles and Practices of the Society of Friends In attempting to give some account of the main teachings of the Society of Friends, it is not intou ded to fully set forth their religious belief; but only those points in it where the difference of outlook from all other professing Christians marks them as a distinct religious community. To do this it is necessary to give earnest heed to the united testimony of those individuals who laid the foun dations, and yet to be mindful of the danger of seeking our guidance from these fathers in the truth, lest our religion become one regulated chiefly by precedent; and thus we get into the same kind of error which it was their mission to lead out of. It is right to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake, and to imitate their faith, considering the issue of their life but Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, to-day, and for ever; and as in times that are past, so in the time now present, His Holy Spirit leads into all truth, and will continue to do so, even unto the end of the world. Excerpt from The Doctrines of Friends: Or, Principles of the Christian Religion, as Held by the Society of Friends, Commonly Called Quakers Though the arrangement of the subjects, and the manner of treating them, have been dictated by the views presented to my own mind, yet in the subjects themselves, I have endeavoured to keep to the ao knowledged doctrines of the Society. And in com piling the following pages, I have made such ex tracts, from the writings of our early Friends, as seemed necessary to establish the position, that they held the principles laid down. And in taking these extracts I have consulted those parts of their writ ings, in which they make a statement of what they believe, rather than those in which they expose the errors of contrary opinions. Excerpt from Sketch of the Rise of the Religious Society of Friends: Their Doctrines and Discipline Two centuries have passed away since the first members of the Society of Friends believed themselves called upon to bear a conspicuous testimony by deed as well as word to the purity and spirituality of the Christian religion. Reverently accepting the doctrines of Christ and His apostles in their comprehensive fulness as recorded in the New Testament, they felt that they could not rest in a mere profession even of these blessed truths. Their souls longed for the possession of the substance, even reconciliation with the Father, and communion with Him by His own Spirit through the one living Saviour, Advocate, and Intercessor for us, Christ Jesus. That which they sought was not to be found in outward observances. Their spiritual necessities required spiritual refreshments. The ancient sacrifices and ceremonies under the Law, though expressly instituted by Divine authority, were given but for a season, to be fulfilled and ended by Christ. The new covenant of life and salvation was not in these. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
