Excerpt from The Life of the Rev. William Marsh, D.D Tms biography is no record of stirring events, nor is it connected, excepting by passing allusion, with any public matters. But it may serve to show what were the doctrines, opinions, and practice of the Evangelical School of the last century; and to prove what a blessing an English clergyman, with his heart full of love to God and man, may be, in his quiet sphere. Excerpt from The Remains of the Rev. James Marsh, D. D. Late President, and Professor of Moral and Intellectual Philosophy, in the University of Vermont: With a Memoir of His Life As to my own share in the work here presented to the public, I should be disposed to say nothing, were it not proper for me to give some account of the manner in which I have endeavored to dis charge a delicate office of friendship. The late Dr. Marsh, near the close of his life, committed his papers to my care, with the request, that I would select from them such as I might think suitable, and cause them to be published. He hoped they might be not without use to the World; at least, that they would prove acceptable to his friends, and perhaps a source of some little benefit to his children. A few of these writings were already designed for the press by himself; but none of them had, as yet, undergone that te vision and that careful correction, which doubtless he would have chosen to bestow on them, had his life and health been spared. Excerpt from The Life of Rev. W. W. Everts, D.D Herder, in speaking of a national biography, remarks that "the names of those only should have a place in it who have contributed something to the well-being of mankind. The chief aim of biography is to show how the man became what he was, what obstacles he had to encounter, how far he went, what he left to be done by others, and how he himself regarded the work of his life." The life of Dr. Everts, aside from the pastorate, was devoted to the establishment of educational institutions in Chicago, to the dedication of church buildings, chiefly in the West, and to the advocacy of pure translations of the Bible throughout the world. The obstacles he met with, especially in this public service, and the joy that came at last with the firm establishment of the institutions and ideas with which he had been identified, are fully stated in the following pages: "It has seemed to me that my public life, in its enthusiastic co-operation with the denomination and with public progress, might be a guide to some making the public service their aim, and give them hints of methods and warnings of trials incident to all honest and earnest workers. My individuality seemed to me lost in devotion to the public good, in measures for social and Christian progress." Excerpt from The Life and Sermons of Rev. William Wyatt of the Wyoming Conference I have also had respect to the fact that my life, with all others, is part of the' great book of Providence which is being written, and must go down to posterity. My father, who was born in 1770, and was fourteen years old when the Church was organized, as will be seen by these pages, was intimately connected with the rise and progress of Methodism, both in the United States and Canada, for the first eighty years of its history. Under our own observation, the Church has grown from fourteen thousand in 1784, to be counted by millions in 1878, and from narrow borders, to fill the whole land - yea, overspread a continent and the world. Here I record the part I have taken in this great work, and furnish my contribution to the general history of Methodism in this country. Excerpt from Life the Right Reverend William Pinkney D. D. LL. D: Fifth Bishop of Maryland The work of writing this Biography of the late Bishop pinkney very unexpectedly devolved upon me. Shortly after the Bishop's decease a number of the clergy and laity united in a letter to the late Rev. Dr. Meyer Lewin, requesting him to prepare such a Memoir. He consented to do so, but while engaged in gathering materials for the work, he was suddenly called to his rest before he had written a line or made a single note. Thereupon, I was solicited by the family and personal friends of the Bishop to undertake the work. Among those specially urgent that I should do so was the late Mr. W. W. Corcoran, whose affection for the person and devotion to the memory of Bishop pinkney were of the most ardent character. So emphatic were Mr. Corcoran's expressed wishes upon the subject, and so generous his proposals with regard to the expenses of the preparation and publication of the Life, that I felt constrained to subordinate all-other considera tions and assume the task. Owing to the pressure of other cares and duties, which I could not wholly neglect, the task is only now accomplished. Mr. Corcoran did not live to see the work completed and to carry out personally his intentions respecting its publication but in pursuance of his request and direction the entire expense of the preparation and publication of this work has been borne by his executors. As Bishop pinkney kept no diary except of strictly official acts, used no care in filing letters received, and made no copies of his own letters except in some rare instances, the difficulty of placing in consecutive order and with desired completeness the records and incidents of his life has been very great. Most consistently with his nature, it seems never to have occurred to him that occa sion would arise for the use of such materials in a Biography of himself. I have endeavored to give from those materials that I could secure a fair detail of the incidents and experiences of his life.
