Previous research has shown that adolescents diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have deficits in various areas, including the acquisition of communication, social, and behavioral skills. However, adolescents with ASD typically follow the same physical development patterns as their nondisabled peers. This discrepancy results in a struggle in the acquisition of socio-sexual knowledge necessary to navigate through maturation while developing interpersonal adult relationships. This literature review examines research of sexuality education involving adolescents diagnosed with ASD. Much of the available research describes the importance of sexuality education for students with ASD, however such education frequently does not happen because of the stigma and discomfort many adults feel in discussing sexuality with adolescents. Furthermore, previous research has shown that without instruction, adolescents with ASD frequently display maladaptive sexual behavior. This literature review highlights the need for more research to identify effective ways to instruct socio-sexual knowledge to adolescents with ASD.
