The advance of the Church at this day in numbers, in cohesion, in zeal, in up-to-date culture, is one of the marvels of a wonderful age; yet from every quarter rings the lament over the enormous "leakages" from her ranks. There is an analogy to this in God's other kingdom of Nature. The primeval forests grow in luxuriance and majesty and extent year by year, notwithstanding the countless multitudes of young shoots which appear and perish. But the analogy of Nature must not allow us to stand contented, as if it were inevitable that millions should fail to survive in the struggle for supernatural existence. It is the desire of the Almighty that not one should be lost, and He has provided that all should come to a knowledge of the truth. Excerpt from Religious Education and the Public School: An American Problem At the meeting of the Inter-Church Conference in Carnegie Hall, New York, in November, 1905, at which twenty-nine Protestant Churches of America were represented, one of the papers treated the question of Weekday Religious Instruction. Its main proposition was favorably received, and the following resolution was adopted by the Conference: Resolved, That in the need of more systematic education in religion, we recommend for the favorable consideration of the Public School authorities of the country the proposal to allow the children to absent themselves without detriment from the public schools on Wednesday or on some other afternoon of the school week for the purpose of attending religious instruction in their own churches; and we urge upon the churches the advisability of availing themselves of the opportunity so granted to give such instruction in addition to that given on Sunday. The further consideration of the subject was referred to the Executive Committee. By direction of this Committee a report on Week-day Instruction in Religion was presented at the First Meeting of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America, held in Philadelphia in 1908. Especially does it necessitate a consideration of educational processes and materials. In the haste to achieve efficiency may it not be that some indispensable values have been sacrificed? The words of Jesus sound again with a new emphasis: "What shall it profit a man. if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?" The same applies to a nation as well as to the individual. "Has democracy failed?" men are asking to-day. Has Christianity failed? These have not failed, but, as one recent writer has said, they have been found difficult and have not yet been fairly tried. Under the conviction that a fresh study of the relation of religious education to democracy would just now be especially timely, the present writer prepared for the Commission on Christian Education of the Federal Council of the Churches of Christ in America a Survey of Week-day Religious Instruction.
