One of this committee's most important duties is the exercise of its oversight responsibility. This includes a responsibility to exam ine the performance of the agencies that implement legislation the Congress has enacted, in order to see whether they have been ful filling the statutory mandates. Today's hearing will examine the National Indian Gaming Commission and how it has carried out its obligations under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. The committee will receive testimony regarding the status of the recent enforcement activities of the Commission in, among others, the States of California, Nebraska, and Connecticut.
