"Constrained Deformation of Materials: Devices, Heterogeneous Structures and Thermo-Mechanical Modeling" is an in-depth look at the mechanical analyses and modeling of advanced small-scale structures and heterogeneous material systems. Mechanical deformations in thin films and miniaturized materials, commonly found in microelectronic devices and packages, MEMS, nanostructures and composite and multi-phase materials, are heavily influenced by the external or internal physical confinement. A continuum mechanics-based approach is used, together with discussions on micro-mechanisms, to treat the subject in a systematic manner under the unified theme. Readers will find valuable information on the proper application of thermo-mechanics in numerical modeling as well as in the interpretation and prediction of physical material behavior, along with many case studies. Additionally, particular attention is paid to practical engineering relevance. Thus real-life reliability issues are discussed in detail to serve the needs of researchers and engineers alike.

The basic idea of the NATO International Exchange Program for funding an Advanced Research Workshop on "Chemical Reactions in Organic and Inorganic Constrained Systems" was to contribute to a better under standing of the influence of configurational constraints on reaction mechanisms, as imposed on reagents by organic or inorganic templates. The original character of the Workshop was to bring together organic and inorganic chemists with this common interest in order to promote the exchange of ideas and, eventually, interdisciplinary research. All the participants to the Workshop agreed that the discussions were stimulating and fruitful. The judgement of the reader of the Proceedings may perhaps be more restrictive because the director (Professor J. J. FRIPIAT) and co-director (Professor P. SINAY), faced with the impossible task of covering such an enormous domain, were obliged to select, somewhat arbitrarily, a limited number of topics which seemed to them to be the most important. Their choice may be discussed and there surely are important gaps, with fields which were not considered. However, both organisers believe that, within the limited span of time and number of contributors, most of the exciting areas were addressed. Dr. WARNHEIM was kind enough to write a commentary on the Workshop; his summary, written with the hindsight of a few weeks, supports, we believe, this opinion. Dr. SETTON has accepted the burden of collecting and shaping (not selectively) the manuscripts. This book would not be what it is without his efficient contribution as scientific secretary of the Workshop.

High-technology industries using plastic deformation demand soundly-based economical decisions in manufacturing design and product testing, and the unified constitutive laws of plastic deformation give researchers aguideline to use in making these decisions. This book provides extensive guidance in low cost manufacturing without the loss of product quality. Each highly detailed chapter of Unified Constitutive Laws of Plastic Deformation focuses on a distinct set of defining equations. Topics covered include anisotropic and viscoplastic flow, and the overall kinetics and thermodynamics of deformation. This important book deals with a prime topic in materials science and engineering, and will be of great use toboth researchers and graduate students. Describes the theory and applications of the constitutive law of plastic deformation for materials testing Examines the constitutive law of plastic deformation as it applies to process and product design Includes a program on disk for the determination and development of the constitutive law of plastic deformation Considers economical design and testing methods

This publication is based upon lectures given during a well-received course on physical metallurgy and originally intended for students specializing in fields related to metallic materials. But, as the author points out, metallic materials are the most widely investigated group of materials and their study therefore gives a good basis for understanding how other materials can be made to reveal interrelationships between their structures and properties; especially with regard to those properties associated with strain. Similar types of rule can then be applied to other materials, in spite of their apparent differences.

This book is devoted to the deformation and failure in metallic materials, summarizing the results of a research programme financed by the "Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft". It presents the recent engineering as well as mathematical key aspects of this field for a broad community. Its main focus is on the constitutive behaviour as well as the damage and fracture of metallic materials, covering their mathematical foundation, modelling and numerics, but also relevant experiments and their verification.
