Excerpt from Parent, Child, and Church The following pages have been written with the conviction that others have experienced perplexities similar to my own in passing from a religious childhood, through a religious youth, to a religious manhood without ever having consciously experienced conversion, and still finding no place for that sort of religious development in such preaching as I was permitted to hear; and instead of deriving comfort from religious services, being, rather, made miserable, lest my religious life was seriously at fault somewhere without being able to discover just where. Since working in the pastorate I have made the acquaintance of several young people all of whom were trying to fit the experience of conversion, as popularly preached, into their lives with the same unsatisfactory results that I had experienced in my youthful days. Excerpt from The Training of Children in the Christian Family This is a book for parents which deals with princi ples rather than with problems or cases. It aims to help parents to think for themselves; and does not undertake to present ready-made formulas for the training of children or prescriptions for use in various emergencies. It is not mere theory, how ever; most of its materials lie within the author's experience as parent and as teacher. The outline of the book is that of an introductory course for the training of parents, prepared and released by the International Sunday School Lesson Committee under the title of Hints on Child Training, as one of its elective courses for adult classes in the Sunday school. The editors of The Church School requested me to prepare a series of articles, following this outline, which might be used as a basis for study and discussion in parents' classes. In that form, the chapters of this book appeared in that publication, and have been used as a course of study by classes of parents in Sunday schools of various denominations, and as the basis for a year's programs and discussions by mothers' clubs and parent-teacher associations. It is hoped that the book may find a yet wider use by such classes and groups, as well as commend itself to the reading of individual fathers and mothers. My thanks are due to the editors of The Church School. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Child Versus Parent: Some Chapters on the Irrepressible Conflict in the Home Nothing can be more important than to seek to bring to the home some Of the responsibilities with which other agencies such as school and church are today unfitly burdened. False is the charge that school and church fail to co-operate with the home. Truer is the suggestion that church and school have vainly undertaken to do that which the home must largely do. The teacher in church and school may supplement the effort of the parent but cannot and may not be asked to perform the work of parents. The school is overburdened to distraction, the church tinkers at tasks which in the nature of things must fall to parents or be left undone. And the school is attempting to become an agency for the uni versal relief of the home, which cannot be freed of its particular responsibilities even by the best intentioned school or church. Excerpt from Religious Training of Children By mrs. Joel swartz Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it.-prov. Some have doubted the reliability of thepromise in this passage of Scripture because the children of Christian parents do not always become the fol lowers of Christ. Yet candid thought will make all confess that the failure must be in the training and not in the divine promise. It must be that the parent has not comprehended the full meaning of the word train or the necessity of beginning the training with the child's earliest years, while its na ture - is still so plastic that it may be moulded into a true Christian character, or some outside influences have prevented it from being reared up in the way in which it should go.
