Excerpt from Mildew Manse Father-Dear: Here am I, Little Jumping Joan, as you used to call me, in a city far away from that four by nine place where you and Mark left me. I can see your look of consternation and hear your guarded gutterals, but read farther and you will see that I have landed on my feet - steady little feet, you always said. You will also see that I am better housed and homed than I was in that halfway hamlet on the hillside. You know I never could stay "put" anywhere. The wanderlust which sent you to Northern Alaska to recuperate our fallen fortunes brought me here. I'd rather be an agile ashcat in an alley than a lonely lily in the field, anyway; and then, too, daddy dear, I want to be a help instead of the hindrance I've always been to you. Excerpt from The Old Manse and a Few Mosses Hawthorne, like most writers of the present day, was wont to send out his stories and sketches through the magazines of his time, and to collect them after ward into volumes. He gave the felicitous title, taken from Shakespeare, to one of these collections, of Twice Told Tales, and to another, of Mosses from an Old Manse. It was when he was living in the manse, or residence of the minister at Concord, Massachusetts, that he made this collection, and by a graceful turn gave a title to it which intimated how antique, for the most part, were the stories which he had been writing; how, like the moss, they gathered about the life of an old society. The collection consists of twenty-six tales, together with an introductory chapter, descriptive of the manse itself. Four of these have been selected, also introduced by the account of the old manse, which is one of the most characteristic of Hawthorne's play ful leisurely sketches. Excerpt from The Manse at Barren Rocks For long after the separation, it remained a country of narrow valleys and forbidding hills, little sought after and little desired. But when its timber found ready market, when the hidden lakes of oil were discovered and the long rich veins of coal were found, it became the point of interest for a type of keen and calculating mind. The promoter, the money-getters, hordes of self - seekers, invaded its territory, laid low the mighty trees and disem bowled the hills. It became a workshop, grimy, black, outraged. Ou the mountains the whine of the mills; in the valleys the clatter of drills, and everywhere the dust from the coal. "A house in the center of Bangkok becomes the point of confluence where lives are shaped by upheaval, memory, and the lure of home. Witness to two centuries' flux in one of the world's most restless cities, a house plays host to longings and losses past, present, and future. A nineteenth-century missionary doctor pines for the comforts of New England even as he finds the vibrant foreign chaos of Siam increasingly difficult to resist. A post-war society woman marries, mothers, and holds court, little suspecting the course of her future. A jazz pianist is summoned in the 1970s to conjure music that will pacify resident spirits, even as he's haunted by ghosts of his former life. Not long after, a young woman gives swimming lessons in the luxury condos that have eclipsed the old house, trying to outpace the long shadow of her political past. And in the post-submergence Bangkok of the future, a band of savvy teenagers guides tourists and former residents past waterlogged, ruined landmarks, selling them tissues to wipe their tears for places they themselves do not remember. Time collapses as these stories collide and converge, linked by blood, memory, yearning, chance, and the forces voraciously making and remaking the amphibian, ever-morphing city itself"--Provided by publisher.

A stalwart orphan sets out on a spine-tingling adventure in this wildly imaginative and darkly funny Victorian middle grade novel. High on a cliff above the gloomy Victorian town of Withering-by-Sea stands the Hotel Majestic. Inside the walls of the damp, dull hotel, eleven-year-old orphan Stella Montgomery leads a miserable life with her three dreadful aunts. Stella dreams of adventuring on the Amazon—or anyplace, really, as long as it isn’t this dreary town where nothing ever happens. Then one night Stella sees something she shouldn’t have. Soon she finds herself on the run from terrifying Professor Stark and his gang of thugs. But how can one young girl outwit an evil magician, much less rescue his poor, mistreated assistant? With the help of a mysterious maestro, his musical cats, and a lively girl named Gert, Stella Montgomery sets out to do the impossible.
