DOWNLOAD EBOOKMathias Hook came to Pennsylvania from Maryland in the early 1780s. He was born about 1747. He bought and sold land throughout the area and also had transactions in Brooke county, Virginia. Hookstown, Pennsylvania was named after Mathias Hook. He died on 27 April 1836 at the age of 89. His wife Catherine died sometime before he did. They were parents of fifteen children. Descendants live in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky and elsewhere.

DOWNLOAD EBOOKThe immigrant ancestor, Philip Mathias (Johan Philip Mattes) (1744-1834), was born in the area of Rhine Palatine. He came to Philadelphia in 1764. In 1769 he married Anna Catherine Kinzel in Cleona/Annville, Lebanon Twp., Lancaster Co., Pa. A chapter is devoted to each of his seven children and descendants. A long chapter is also devoted to the Wrights, who are multiply related to the Mathiases. These Wrights stem from an early Wright family of Baltimore Co., Maryland. Descendants live in Pennsylvania, Kansas, Colorado and elsewhere.

The first four were probably born in Pennsylvania, the others in Prince George's County, Maryland. He was the first permanent German settler west of Frederick County, Maryland. Descendants lived in Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Texas, Arkansas and elsewhere.
