Marci Penner and WenDee Rowe hit the road for parts of four years to look in every one of the 626 incorporated towns and cities and in hundreds of other dots on the map and countryside locations. They drove dusty back roads and navigated big-city highways. They looked for architecture, art, commerce, cuisine, customs, geography, history, and people wherever they went.
