Spiritualism is a religious movement based on the belief that spirits of the deceased exist and are able to communicate with living people. It began to develop in the 1840s and had reached its peak of popularity by the 1920s, particularly in English-speaking countries. First published in 1920, “Is Spiritualism Based on Fraud?” is an investigation into the authenticity of spiritualism and related claims by Joseph McCabe, examining evidence from many sources and accounts including Sir A. C. Doyle. Contents include: “Mediums: Black, White, and Grey”, “How Ghosts are Made”, “The Mystery of Raps and Levitations”, “Spirit Photographs and Spirit Pictures”, “A Chapter of Ghostly Accomplishments”, “The Subtle Art of Clairvoyance”, “Messages from the Spirit World”, “Automatic Writing”, and “Ghost-land and its Citizens”. Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. It is with this in mind that we are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with the original text and artwork.

Excerpt from Is Spiritualism Based on Fraud?: The Evidence Given by Sir A. C. Doyle and Others Drastically Examined On March 11 of this year Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did me the honour of debating the claims of Spiritualism with me before a vast and distinguished audience at the Queen's Hall, London. My opponent had insisted that I should open the debate; and, when it was pointed out that the critic usually follows the exponent, he had indicated that I had ample material to criticize in the statement of the case for Spiritualism in his two published works. How conscientiously I addressed myself to that task, and with what result, must be left to the reader of the published debate. Suffice it to say that my distinguished opponent showed a remarkable disinclination to linger over his own books, and wished to "broaden the issue." Since the bulk of the time allotted to me in the debate was then already spent, it was not possible to discuss satisfactorily the new evidences adduced by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and not recorded in his books. I hasten to repair the defect in this critical examination of every variety of Spiritualistic phenomena. My book has a serious aim. The pen of even the dullest author - and I trust I do not fall into that low category of delinquents - must grow lively or sarcastic at times in the course of such a study as this. When one finds Spiritualists gravely believing that a corpulent lady is transferred by spirit hands, at the rate of sixty miles an hour, over the chimney-pots of London, and through several solid walls, one cannot be expected to refrain from smiling. The latest from acclaimed author Gail Jarrow reveals how magicians—including Harry Houdini and his team of investigators—exposed fake mediums who exploited the vulnerable and gullible in the early twentieth century. After millions of people died during World War I and from the 1918 influenza pandemic, the popularity of Spiritualism soared. Desperate to communicate with their dead loved ones, the bereaved fell prey to extortion by fraudulent mediums and fortune-tellers. But magician Harry Houdini wasn't fooled. He recognized the scammers' methods as no more than conjurer's tricks. Angered by the way people were exploited, Houdini set out to expose the ghost hoaxes. In his stage show, he revealed the fraudsters’ techniques, and he used a team of undercover investigators to collect proof of séance deceptions. His head secret agent was a young New York private detective and disguise expert, Rose Mackenberg—a woman who continued her ghost-busting career for decades, long after Houdini's death in 1926. Ideal for young readers and adults who are drawn to the worlds of psychics and magicians, this riveting book uncovers a little-known chapter in American history and details the ways people were (and still are) deceived by mediums and fortune-tellers.

What is Clairvoyance? What is Clairvoyance? Clairvoyance is a French word that means “Clear Seeing.” It’s a psychic ability, the intuitive 6th Sense, and the subtle perception that allows us to see energy. We have our usual 5 senses of the body (touch, taste, sight, smell, hearing), and we also have many psychic senses that the spirit uses to receive more subtle information, beyond the five ordinary senses. Claims for the existence of paranormal and psychic abilities such as clairvoyance have not been supported by scientific evidence. Parapsychology explores this possibility, but the existence of the paranormal is not accepted by the scientific community. The scientific community widely considers parapsychology, including the study of clairvoyance, a pseudoscience. Thus, it is strived in this E-Booklet to precisely present the several relevant aspects of this psychic ability along with plenty of relevant historical ILLUSTRATIONS for the enthusiastic Medicos! …Dr. H.
