Not illustrated. 1912 edition. Excerpt: ...provided only with general illumination. The provision of ample light usually effecting economies in productiozz, it will probably be a paying proposition to provide localized-general illumination by means of a single row of 60-to I50watt tungsten lamps in extensive or intensive metal reflectors spaced 8 to 12 ft. apart, depending upon the intensity of illumination required. These lamps should be suspended at a height of about 5 ft. above the bench and in a single row down its center line. Such an arrangement will be very satisfactory for the ordinary grade of bench work.-Vhere very fine work, such as die sinking. is to be done, better results would be obtained by providing two rows of lights--one down either edge of the bench, the lighting units in the two rows being staggered with respect to each other. In laying out an installation of this character, the bench might be considered as two single benches placed back to back and the light problem treated accordingly. In arranging lighting installations for benches. and in fact for all classes of machine work, it is important that the lamps be so placed that the light from them does not fall directly on the eye. Most of the evils of bad lighting of benches are due to the fact that bare lamps are usually provided and are suspended over each vise at about the level of the workman's eye. It does not take any great length of time for such an installation to ruin the eye-sight of any worker. For the above reasons, metal reflectors placed at the proper height to clear all work on the bench and to give an even distribution of light, are recommended. The workman should not be able to look di-. rectly at a light unless he is immediately underneath the reflector. /lssvmbling.--For a s s e m bl...

Not illustrated. 1910 edition. Excerpt: ...has grown and the selection has been more and' more rigid; as a result our losses during the summer tryout have decreased from 40 per cent to 8 per cent. We learned the first year, and we have had it verified each year since, that the shop will spot a "yellow streak" in a man before the university even suspects it. An attempt to sneak spoiled work through is never a great success and it requires only a few days for a young man to realize that he must stand squarely on his own merits and that most of the men in overalls about him are a peculiarly keen lot of men worth cultivating. This is when a would-be Edison begins his combination course in tact and integrity. We, at the college end, soon found our work under a scrutiny and criticism, with final judgment suspended, and this, too, from a source which does not hesitate to scrutinize and criticize. We are now brought face to face with the possible failure of a university department as we never are in our fouryear courses. A student, let us say, has finished successfully his work in physics; some day he does a foolish thing in the shop which indicates that he knows very little about the subject. When you confront him with the fact that he should have known better because he had been taught the theory governing it, you find his grasp on the theory to be very feeble; it is not a part of his working organism. 'there have been deviations, if any. Experiences of this sort caused a serious introspection on the part of our teachers, and a consequent readjustment of our courses and methods. We soon found that much of our trouble resulted from a lack of co-ordination between courses. Our experience taught us that it was necessary to have a separate set of men to co-ordinate the work...
