Excerpt from Index to the Laws of Illinois, 1812-1968, Vol. 1: 1812-1867 This index was compiled using information which was handwritten in Iedgers on file in the Index Department of the Secretary of State's Office. The subject matter entries in this index do not necessarily match the entries in the index of the published books entitled Laws of Illinois (session Laws). The significance of this index is the inclusion of the enrolled law number. No law enacted from 1812 to 1968 can be retrieved by the State Archives unless the enrolled law number is known. The Session Laws do not contain this number. Beginning in 1969 a Public Act number (rather than an enrolled law number) was assigned to a bill when it was approved by the Governor and filed with the Secretary of State. As the Public Act numbers of laws enacted since 1969 are published in the Session Laws and due to the fact that these laws can be retrieved by the State Archives by Public Act number, this index ends with the year 1968.
