Excerpt from Humorous Incidents of the Civil War I sent my girl a paper cut full of hearts and other things, also one of my biscuits. I still have the paper, but nine years after we were married she set her trunk out to sun, and a dog got the biscuit out and ate it. A Confederate in Arkansas wanted to know if it killed the dog. I told him I thought it gave him the hydrophobia, at least he died afterwards. I was badly wounded, in my new hat, in a fight near Som erville, Tenn., Christmas week of 1863. A new hat was a rarity to a Confederate soldier in those times. In writing to me a Yankee who was in the fight wanted to know why I did not pick up another, as there were plenty lying around when they left there. As they entered the building, Dr. Craig commenced reading the burial service for the dead. As soon as they reached the pulpit, and set down the corpse, the choir chanted a requiem in the most impressive manner. Rev. Dr. Craig then read the 15th chapter of the First Epistle of St. Paul to the Corinthians, 21st to the 29th verses: "For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead.

Excerpt from Reflections of the Civil War in Southern Humor In this study I have attempted to represent all the types of humor written in the South between the beginning of the Civil War and the beginning of World War I, specifically 1861 and 1914, including war memoirs, nov els, plays, short stories, poetry, and songs. After a survey of humor written during the war, I discuss the soldier, the Negro, the poor white, and the folks at home in wartime, as they are reflected in the postwar humor. Excerpt from Strange Stories of the Civil War Ride, and Lee's surrender, is vivid, first-hand history. One feature of this book is that the latter stories are told by those who took an actual part. This is a book of adventure and of heroic deeds, which are not only of ab sorbing interest, but they also bring a closer realization of the one country which was welded together in the furnace of the Civil War. More extended versions Of the narratives by L. E. Chittenden and General G. A. Forsyth are presented in the former's Recal lections of Lincoln and the latter's Thrilling Days of Army Life. Excerpt from A Little Traitor to the South: A War-Time Comedy, With a Tragic Interlude The torpedo boat was found after the war lying on the bottom of the harbor, about one hundred feet from the wreck of the Housatonic, with her bow pointing toward the sloop of war and with every man of her crew dead at his post, - just as they all expected. I shall be happy if this novel serves to call renewed attention to this Splendid exhibition of American heroism. Had they not fought for a cause which was lost they would still be remem bered, as, in any event, they ought to be. Excerpt from Incidents and Anecdotes of the Civil War During the Presidency of James Buchanan, and just previous to the inauguration of Mr. Lincoln, I was ordered to the command of the coast-survey steamer Active on the Pacific coast. I could not conceive why I was thus ordered, except that ships and officers were at that period being sent out of the way. This, too, at a time when the Southern States were threatening to secede, and it seemed probable the Government would require the services of all its officers to maintain the integrity of the Union. At that moment I was in a despondent frame of mind, and troubled with the most gloomy forebodings. I felt that a crisis was impending that might influence all my prospects in life and cast me upon the world without resources and with a large dependent family. I sought consolation by Visiting the houses of Southern members of Congress in Washington whom I knew, but obtained little satis faction from the sentiments I there heard expressed. One night in December, 1860, on my way home from a Visit to Congress, where I had listened to a great deal of incendiary lan guage from Southern members and plenty of Vituperation from Northern ones, a gentleman met me in the street and informed me of the secession of South Carolina. Excerpt from The Red Badge of Courage an Episode of the American Civil War To his attentive audience he drew a loud and elaborate plan of a very brilliant campaign. When he had finished, the blue-clothed men scattered into small arguing groups between the rows of squat brown huts. A negro teamster who had been dancing upon a cracker box with the hilarious encouragement of twoscore soldiers was deserted. He sat mournfully down. Smoke drifted lazily from a multitude of quaint chim neys. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Southerners: A Story of the Civil War There is in my mind a picture of the days of Sixty-one - Sixty-five. I close my eyes, and out of the mists of the past there rises before me an old white house on a hill. It is springtime. A child is playing in the grass under the trees. A woman watches at the gate. And a soldier comes home from the wars. A soldier, sick, worn, weary; a haggard, broken wreck of the brave young man who left all at his country's first appeal and looked not back so long as he had strength to stand. His fighting days are over. And the woman meets him at the gate - They come down the long walk under the trees toward the little lad, the woman proudly supporting the man's faltering steps. The child, who has grown to step and speech while the man has been absent, shrinks away from the tired figure in the dusty faded Army blue, who stretches out trembling hands to him with words of affectionate appeal. The little boy does not recognize the stranger until he is caught up against that brave heart and hears the words, "My son, my son!" I close my eyes and see once more my Father, as I saw him on that day nearly forty years ago. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
