Excerpt from Navigation of Hudson's Bay The undersigned has the honour to bring under the notice Of the Minister of the Interior, in the following pages, the question of the practicability of establishing an ocean route for trade purposes between Europe and the north-west of the Dominion, via Hudson's Straits and Bay. The Minister will recognize the evidence of Professor Hind as that given before the Committee of the House of Commons on. Immigration, during the last Session of Parliament, and which appears in the report of the Committee. The undersigned, however, in view of the extent to which such a route, if found feasible, would contribute towards the Speedy settlement of the lands of the Dominion, has had the said evidence reprinted in a form more convenient for reference, and more likely to obtain for the subject the consideration which its importance demands. An additional paper recently received from Professor Hind, bearing on the whale fishery of Hudson's Bay, conducted by citizens of the United States, is contributed by him in support of the Opinions previously expressed respecting the valuable fishing industries which would probably be developed upon a more thorough knowledge being obtained of that great inland sea. Excerpt from The Winnipeg and Hudson Bay Railway: Forming, With Hudson Bay and Strait, a New Trade Route Between America and Europe United States Tribute - From their geographical position, Minnesota, Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, and other western territories of the United States will necessarily be tributary to this route, as it will offer them the same advantages and to the like extent as to the Canadian possessions. The farmers, and cattle-men of. Those districts recognize this, and are anxious for the completion of the railway. Red River Valley. Up wards of bushels of wheat are produced annually in the Red River Valley of Minnesota and Dakota, over 80 per cent of which is exported. Much of the land in this valley is yet unoccupied. The Red River flows northward towards Hudson Bay, and is navigated by the largest river steamers from Winnipeg to Fargo, on the the Northern Pacific Railway, a distance of 580 miles. Nearly the whole of this surplus wheat would seek the new route as the shortest and cheapest, the saving in carriage representing the increase in price to the producer, as well as operating as a stimulus to increased production. Excerpt from A Summer and Winter on Hudson Bay In a geological expedition to Hudson Bay in the summer of 1909, the writers saw and experienced so much that was new and strange and interesting, that it seems worth while to write a narrative of the ex pedition, principally as a matter of record, but partly also in response to the kind interest expressed by friends in parts of the story which they have heard. It is a plain account of things and events, thrown together from miscellaneous notes, diaries and memories, with little claim to literary form or finish. Excerpt from Our North Land: Being a Full Account of the Canadian North-West and Hudson's Bay Route, Together With a Narrative of the Experiences of the Hudson's Bay Expedition of 1884 The following pages are founded chiefly upon the experiences of the Canadian Government Expedition to Hudson's Bay and Strait; Mr. Klotz's overland Expedition to Hudson's Bay Dr. Bell's Hudson's Bay Explorations; the Travels and Explorations in the north-west of Dr. Selwyn, Mr. Marcus Smith and many others, and the Travels and Experiences of the Author. I have endeavoured, from the information thus obtained, to give an account of the vast resources of the region in question, to describe the industries now in active operation, and to point out the possibilities of their future development. The export from the products of the oil-bearing animals of the waters of Hudson's Bay alone amounts, at the present time, to over annually, and inay be increased to five times that amount; in many districts the fur trade is yet in its infancy and the cod, salmon, and trout fisheries offer large and sure returns to almost any extent that capital and labour can be found to develop them. In a description of the habits and customs of the native inhabitants, and an account of the adventures of traders, whalers, navigators and missionaries, I have not avoided a certain degree of romance, with which these narratives are necessarily interwoven. But the reader must not mistake this for fiction, which has been rigidly excluded. In a discussion of the question of the practicability of the proposed Hudson's Bay route as a commercial highway, I have brought to bear upon the subject all the evidence obtainable, and left the reader to judge for himself, whether or not, in the near future, the necessities of trade will find a successful channel of transportation from China and Japan to Europe across the American Continent by way of the waters of Hudson's Bay and Strait and whether or not these waters will become a successful outlet for the products of the Canadian N orth-west. Excerpt from A Thousand Miles From a Post Office: Or, Twenty Years' Life and Travel in the Hudson's Bay Regions I DO not envy the men who find this little book uninteresting. The simple facts, simply told, of experiences such as these give to the dullest of us food for thought. What we call civilization makes life easy for us in the quiet round of home experience, and it is wholesome as well as stimulating to be thus reminded by a devoted servant of our Lord of the struggles nobly made, year in and year out, by a pioneer who is facing the hardships of the frozen North. We thank God that we have such a one among us to tell us thus simply of the kind of life which the Christian Missionary in those regions has to live in journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils in the wilderness in weariness and painful ness, in watchings often, and, very markedly, in hunger and thirst and cold. No one can read the book without feeling how the writer loved his life work for all its trials. It is because he thus loved it that others were brought to love the Master whom he serves so well.
